Parents Seek New Tests for Right-To-Die Fla. Woman [Terri Schiavo]

CLEARWATER, Fla. (Reuters) - The parents of a brain-damaged Florida woman at the center of a right-to-die battle said on Thursday they would ask a court to order new medical tests before she is allowed to die.

Robert Schindler, the father of Theresa "Terri" Schiavo, said the tests should be done because of a recent study that found patients with brain damage may be more aware of their surroundings than doctors previously thought.

"Terri never said that however."

Really? You must be close to the family then... or were there when they discussed things like that? Perhaps you should contact her parents' lawyer and offer an affidavit. Oh wait... that is the problem... nobody agrees on what she wanted. Hence all the "fun times" in my house discussing this issue. It's not fun, it's just me stating what I want so people like you (you being a total stranger who doesn't know me even a little bit) don't put words in my mouth after I'm unable to speak. You should have the same discussion with your family... that's my point.

Amen to your Heaven-Sent Prayer, sister Pegita!

Our Merciful Master, we come before You with hearts Breaking on Behalf of Your Dear Daughter, whom the sons of Belial are even now Planning to Destroy. O Father our King, Arise from Thy Throne of Power, Bare Thy Holy Arm, and Deliver our Terri once again! Forbid the sons of Darkness, my King! Terrify them in Your Wrath, Sending their Satanic Marching Orders back from Whence they came. Your enemies are as the Walking Dead, my God; there is no Compassion or Pity in their souls; no Mercy Abides within their breast. Your precious one is merely a Nuisance to them, and a Probable Witness to the Evil of one man.

Come Help us, our Sovereign and Gracious Holy One! One of our own Family is Surrounded by Wolves, and they'll not stop until they Rend her to Pieces. Turn their hearts from their Insanity and Madness, and Cause them to Return our Terri to her Mother's arms. You have been Your Dear One's Strength, O God; continue to Sustain her with Your Eternal, Unfailing Love. Undergird Terri's Family with the Divine Might of Heaven, and Move every Prayer Warrior to Stand in the Gap for Your child.

We Love You, Great King, and Pray in Your Name, and for Your Glory, amen.

I hope the parents have a backup plan to spirit Terri out of that state when the judicial murderer most likely has finally gotten the upper hand....

I suppose you are? Her parents and brother and sister was her family you know. Keep talking, I am seeing where you are coming from....

Oh wait... that is the problem... nobody agrees on what she wanted.

Until Michael met George Felos, everybody agreed what Terri wanted. Judge Greer apparently finds credible the notion that Terri had told Michael she wanted to be starved to death but Michael somehow didn't remember it until years after Terri was incapacitated. I think it seems much more plausible that Felos, who had already been involved in starving many other people, suggested to Michael that he could be rid of Terri sooner if he "remembered" her having said that she wanted to be starved. Perhaps you agree with Judge Greer's finding of credibility, but I find it absurd.

"But you are not Terri, and she never said any such thing."

I know I'm not Terri, and I have no idea what she never said... neither do you.

Be careful what you wish for! I'm not saying you don't have the right to do as you choose, but I can't picture starvation and, more importantly, dehydration to be a pretty picture. Talk about cruel and inhuman treatment!

Oh, that's what I figured. Put Terri away on account of your bravery while you are here and healthy. Don't that make you feel a little weird?

So do you believe that it is a coincidence that the first publicly-stated remembrance by anybody that Terri said she wanted to die was after HINO (husband-in-name-only) Michael Schiavo met with lawyer George Felos who, according to his own book, likes starving people and has done it numerous times before?

I'm coming from North Carolina, in a house where these things are discussed. I have no idea what was discussed in Florida. My point is, if I make my desires clear now, nobody will be arguing about me after I've lost the ability to participate in the debate.

As I said before, good for you. Don't make those choices for others that have not stated so.

"I think it seems much more plausible that Felos, who had already been involved in starving many other people, suggested to Michael..."

You may be correct... My goal is to negate what other people "think" or what "seems much more plausible" by making my desires clear. Life has different meaning to different people. To me, laying in a bed with people around me gauging my reaction to probing, music, baloons, etc. is not life. Maybe it is to you so you better make sure the person closest to you knows that.

"Talk about cruel and inhuman treatment!"

I'll be careful. A month of starving to death would be worth missing the 14 years of watching my family's false hope, legal battles, arguments, etc.

You know what's weird? I never once said Terri should die or be put away. I'm just sitting here at home, not doing anything particularly brave, amazed at the mess there is down in Florida. Excuse me for not wanting the same kind of mess for my family here in NC.

If this murder of Terry Schiavo is allowed then what will the next "reason" be to kill someone? This decision unequivocally reinforces that it's wrong for government to trample the rights of individuals and arbitrarily impose it.

Here are some more facts regarding Terri Schiavo....

(1) Why did Schiavo tell a medical malpractice jury in 1992 that Terri would live a normal life span? After Terri's collapse, Schiavo sued for
medical malpractice. Under civil law, the longer Terri was expected to live, the larger the verdict would probably be. This fact of legal life could explain why Michael presented evidence to the malpractice jury not only that Terri would likely live a normal life span but also that he intended to be a good and loyal husband and care for her for the rest of his life.

(2) Why did Schiavo have a rehabilitation expert testify in front of the malpractice jury to present a detailed plan of therapy for Terri? Schiavo and his lawyer claimed that Terri is incapable of improving physically, but during the 1992 trial, a rehabilitation plan and its anticipated undertaking provided one of the underpinnings for the jury's $1.3 million award. Of that money, Schiavo received $300,000, lawyers' fees were paid, and about $750,000 was put in trust to pay for Terri's rehabilitation.

(3) Given that the jury awarded $750,000 to be used in part for Terri's therapy, why hasn't Schiavo provided any rehabilitation for her since 1991? When asked by King about the issue of rehab, Schiavo described some early efforts to help Terri, such as an experimental surgery in 1990. But he never identified when this rehab took place.

"Schiavo, 41, has been in what some doctors say is a persistent vegetative state since a 1990 heart attack. She can breathe on her own but cannot feed herself or communicate."

The only thing they got right was her name and her age. Reuters is a disgrace.
