(Talon News) -- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Wednesday a proposal for "jobs and prosperity" which she says would provide Americans with "the opportunity to succeed, to live a secure and comfortable life including good jobs here at home, affordable health care, a growing economy with stable prices, investments in new technologies, and fiscal responsibility in government."
"With nearly 8 million Americans unemployed, the need to create jobs is urgent," Pelosi said. "It takes significantly longer to find a job today than in years past ... and too many people have simply given up hope and given up their search. Too many people are trading in hard hats for paper hats in McDonald's restaurants. It just shouldn't be."
As part of the plan, Pelosi and other Democrats are calling for passage of the "long-delayed highway bill," which they say will "ease congestion, improve our quality of life, and create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs."
According to information released by Rep. Pelosi, Democrats support a bill with a $318 billion price tag which will improve highways and transit systems and "create more than 1.8 million jobs over the next six years."
In their plan, the Democrats also address health care costs and offer support for the Small Business Health Insurance Promotion Act, which they say will create a 50 percent tax credit "to help small businesses defray the costs of health coverage and [to help] put more Americans to work."
"Today, House Democrats are putting forth specific steps to achieve a prosperity that includes all Americans in the economic success of our country," Pelosi said. "By creating millions of new jobs, spurring innovation, and investing in America, we will advance economic security for America's families."

Yes, tax us into prosperity and let the government control everything. It's worked so well for China, Cub, and North Korea. It worked so well for Iraq. Why, it just works every time!
Nearly 8 million unemployed? Where does she get those figures or is she including retirees and home to stay moms?
If so I hope your body is not displayed on websites like those that "Jeff" sponsored.
Sure, road construction jobs will spend us into prosperity. Don't we know this because of the history of the WPA - oh, that didn't create prosperity during the Depression ?
Why do these people think we have forgotten history ? They must be feeling the need to appease the unions some more.
BULLSEYE!
Small wonder I call her BOOZER BOXER! She's GOTTA be hitting the sauce after Breakfast is over. After all, it's 5pm SOMEWHERE in the world, right Barb?
Still the same old FDR policies.
But this isn't 1932.
I guess it all just depends on how you look at the glass.
a little more:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans claiming initial jobless benefits fell unexpectedly last week in a show of strength for the U.S. labor market, while an energy-driven import price rise offered mixed signals on inflation pressures.
First-time claims for state unemployment insurance aid dropped 2,000 to 302,000 in the week ended Feb. 12, the Labor Department (news - web sites) said on Thursday. It was the third straight weekly decline and defied Wall Street expectations for a rise to 315,000.
U.S. Treasury debt prices added to offshore losses as the unexpectedly buoyant layoff report and the whiff of imported inflation made it just a little more likely the Federal Reserve (news - web sites) would keep raising interest rates, while the dollar strengthened against the euro.
The Labor Department said last week's decrease brought new jobless claims to their lowest level since October 2000, before the economy tipped into recession.
"This is confirmation that the labor markets are improving and it's consistent with the decline in unemployment we saw down to 5.2 percent in January," said Gary Thayer, chief economist at A.G. Edwards & Sons in St. Louis.
Hard hat....paper hat.....pay's the same.
Yay! Blue skies and sunshine!
Needless to say, whenever there has been good news about the economy--which is to say, at least once a week--the mainstream media have simply ignored it, or relegated it to the small print.
The general perception is probably that, well, things are not too bad, but far from the wonderful boom times of the clinton era.
I expect the media will soon jump in and start pumping Pelosi's new plan for prosperity. They are piling up a lot of distrust, but it still works to some extent.
Is this the New NEW NEW "NEW DEAL"...
At least these Elitist know how to "recycle".
The new "USSR" (United Soviet Socialist Recylers)
Construction companies already have significant pools of people that they use on and off so the likelihood of anyone new actually trying to make a career in construction is weak at best. Not everyone who is currently unemployed has the required qualifications to do construction anyway (other than shoveling asphalt off the back of a truck, which is the worst job imaginable IMHO).
A waste of time and money bill especially since at those figures unemployment is about 3.2%, not at all what I'd call a critical unemployment level.
Pelosi is an idiot... the myth that folks are trading in good paying jobs to work at McD's in vast numbers is pure propoganda... perhaps she's missed the record starts of new businesses in america in the last few years....
Aside from the obvious condescension in this statement, there's the twisting (or complete ignorance) of basic economics. We had 2.2 million jobs created last year for an unemployment rate of 5.2%. Historically, we've considered this level to be near "full employment"... now it's a crisis.
May God thwart the liars.
Wow, a massive government works program. The unions are happy.
