PROVIDENCE -- Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee could face a serious challenge if Democratic Rep. James Langevin enters the 2006 race for his seat, according to a Brown University poll released Wednesday.
The poll conducted Feb. 12-13 found Langevin leading Chafee 41 percent to 27 percent if the race were held now.
Langevin has not entered the race but plans to make an announcement by the end of next month. Chafee hasn't said whether he would run again, but has begun raising money for a campaign.
The poll indicated that Chafee would have an easier time against Secretary of State Matt Brown, who has said he will run. In that matchup, Chafee leads 39 percent to Brown's 25 percent.
The Taubman Center Public Opinion Survey polled 384 registered voters statewide, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
In the governor's race, Republican Gov. Don Carcieri led two possible Democratic opponents, Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty and former Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse.
Carcieri led 44 percent against Fogarty, with 33 percent, according to the poll. He led 46 percent to 30 percent in the poll's matchup against Whitehouse.
Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they feel Carcieri is doing a good or excellent job, down from 60 percent last year.
Attorney General Patrick Lynch's job approval jumped, with 50 percent of respondents saying he was doing a good or excellent job, up from 40 percent last year.
The poll also found that Rhode Islanders consider themselves part of Red Sox Nation.
Sixty-six percent of respondents said they were Red Sox fans. Eleven percent said they rooted for the New York Yankees.
It's a stupid state, but rooting for the Democrat here is the early call.
Better an honest Democrat than a fake Republican. Even if it does hurt the numbers.
I agree. I wouldn't shed a tear if Chafee went down to defeat.
If, by "honest" you mean real, it would seem to follow that you'd vote for Hillary over Guiliani, Pataki, Snowe, Chafee, or any other RINO you'd care to name.
Cripes, can't these pollsters at least give us six months off before they start spouting their nonsense? I'm on campaign overload . . . you would think these morons would at least want to catch their breaths before they start lying to us again!
Will Chafee even be the Republican nominee?
Can't they find a good Republican?
RI is your typical New England state. We elect Left wing Dems, we have corrupt unions running things, and we elect very liberal Republicans.
If honesty were my only criterion, yes. I can't imagine anything other than such a catastrophic choice making me cast a ballot for Guiliani, Pataki, Snowe or Chafee. I think I voted Green instead of Chafee last time, just to spoil my vote.
I agree. Chaffee is one of the biggest back-stabbing weasels around. I'd never vote for him. I remember when Jumpin' Jeffords became "independent" and Republicans were trying to scramble for votes he basically said that he'd switch to the Democrats any time they really needed him.
"Okay, folks, who's going to win the Super Bowl next year? Still hung over from this last game? Oh well, that's too bad . . . who's gonna win next year's game?"
Eagles will win 27-24 over the Pats.
I understand that Mayor Stephen Laffey of Cranston, a young, energetic conservative, is considering a primary challenge.
A confessed, unrepentant traitor is still a traitor.
Therefore, I'll take a RINO over a party-line, partisan Dem every time. That way, I have at least some hope that both I -- and the Constitution -- will get decent representation some of the time.
Do we really have to ponder polls 22 months out? Can't we give it a rest for awhile?
Langevin is much more conservative than Chafee. He votes about 50% pro-life.
LOL. I hope you're right . . . AND I'd darn sure rather have this debate than a debate about polls, polls, and more polls. These political pollsters won't even let us catch a breath.
One of them called me a week ago and I just asked them . . . "Who is paying for this poll? You tell me that so I can unload on them when we get through and I'll answer your questions." He hung up on me.
True! But .. it might prod Chaffe to get his voting over where it belongs - and to stop siding with the dems.
Fear can be a good thing!
Yeah, I've been getting about a dozen calls a week from Newt. I finally told the guy I liked Newt, but I'd never vote for him for president and they are wasting their time and money calling me.
