Curtis Adams, a long-time Democrat commissioner in Tennessee switches parties (due to Howard Dean)
ABC News/Note ^ | 2/15/05

Posted on 02/15/2005 10:25:50 AM PST by Cableguy

While they fight it out, a long-time Democratic commissioner in Hamilton County, Tennessee announced Monday that he's switching parties. A release from the State Republican Party pegged Curtis Adams' move to Dean, but a spokesman for the state party tells us that "local party officials have left the option open for Commissioner Adams to join the Republican Party for some time, and I think he has been watching the direction that his party has been taking and decided that now was the right time."

Said Adams yesterday: "For almost 18 years in office as a Democrat I believed in what they were — not what it is today. The Republican Party is a party of conviction, a party of change. Their values, goals and beliefs are mine."

Whether there's more in that pot o' gold remains to be seen.

Read someplace yesterday some mouthing of dem claiming they could win big in Utah?

But realistically we haven't seen many converts from republican to democrat, for office holders. Or did I miss them all?

The number of elected democrats that have switched to the GOP since Clinton was elected is either just below or just above 1,000. Number of elected republicans that have switched to the democrats can be counted on one hand.

Wow, that's a remarkable figure. Do you have any source for this?

The thing I find disturbing about this is that I fear there will be more defections from the Democrats, but not because they have moved so far left. Rather, it will be because the Republican party has become to centrist in its position.

Traditional Democrats (of the FDR, JFK type) now feel comfortable in the GOP. Maybe we need some introspection as to whether we're compromising TOO much.

Howard Dean could be the greatest thing to happen to the Republican Party since Hillary tried to institute universal health care, complete with punitive provisions for doctors who treated people outside the government system.

Sane Democrats everywhere, welcome to the Republican Party!

Yes, I do but I do not have it handy at the moment. And remember, I'm talking about elected at any level, down to dog catcher.

Now there's a way to look at the glass half empty. In two days since Howie took office there has been as many defections and your worried that it spells doom for the Republican party. Me, I see a pony in there.

If can remember to dig it up, I'd sure like to see it.

Thanks,

Don't forget that one of the greatest men in our country's history started out a Democrat of the FDR type.

His name was Ronald Wilson Reagan.

The Howard Dean political body odor is some nasty stuff..
latent RINOs just might desert the ship enmasse..
Although RATS at least they are fairly clean rats..

On land... the rats become RINOs.. domesticated rats..

I been doing a little searching but for some reason I am only finding things dated back in '99 when the number was approaching 500

Good point. Until one of these party's, or should I say "parties" gets back to the Constitution, I have little use for either of them.
