"The Church kept the details secret for decades until they was revealed during the Pope's visit to Fatima in 2000. "

Wasn't there some controversy over this? It turned out the third secret was nothing earth shattering- so why all the hush-hush for so many years?

I'm glad to see that next year,Sister Lucia will be buried in Fatima, with her two little cousins. I can almost see the home-coming she got,not only from her mother and father, but from Jacinto and Francisco. RIP.

I am very impressed that Portugal has declared this a day of mourning. Thanks for posting this.

She has led a saintly life for many years. God rest her soul.

Although perhaps it shouldn't be, this is a political event of a sort. The apparition of Our Lady at Fatima happened at a time when Portuguese socialists (read Communists) were threatening to take over the country and persecute Christians, much as they did in Spain during the Civil War.

Among its other effect, Fatima seems to have staved off the worst excesses of socialism in Portugal. I haven't followed the current election, but given what recently happened in Spain after the train bombings it will be interesting to see how this election turns out.

I pray that the mourning, and the respect, for Sister Lucy is more than clannish and cultural. I pray they take what she recorded to heart, as true, as meaningful, as something to be done and to be addressed. But a 'socialist-Dem'? Would they do that? Would the Communist opposition? Commies kill priests and nuns. They gun them down in cold blood, as was seen in the much heralded war in Spain in the 30s, where the Commie side was lauded by the trendy artists of the day.

I suppose, at one level, is it GOOD that Portugal remembers not just its own, because I hope it's far more than that, but God and His Church - if they do. Because if they do, then the Portuguese are true to themselves and their history. And if so, then the time of mourning really does mean something in a dark continent, where the light of faith seems almost extinguished.

Reuters showed its anti-Catholic bias by calling Sister Lucia a Fatima "seer." Would it have killed them to call her a Fatima "witness"?
