LISBON (Reuters) - Portugal has declared Tuesday a day of mourning and politicians have cut back election campaigning to mark the death of Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, the last of three children who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary at Fatima.
Dos Santos, who as a child in 1917 described visions which, decades later, the Catholic Church said foretold the attempt to kill Pope John Paul in 1981, died aged 97 on Sunday at her Carmelite convent in Coimbra, 150 km (95 miles) north of Lisbon.
She is to be buried at the convent on Tuesday and her remains will be transferred in a year to nearby Fatima, one of Catholicism's major pilgrimage sites.
Prime Minister Pedro Santana Lopes late on Sunday declared Tuesday a day of national mourning.
"I believe that Sister Lucia is a great figure in the recent history of Portugal," Santana Lopes said in remarks carried on TSF radio. A spokesman said he might attend the funeral.
Portugal holds snap elections on Sunday but Santana Lopes' centre-right Social Democrats and their coalition partner the rightist Popular Party suspended their campaigns on Monday and Tuesday because of the death.
The opposition Socialists, who are well ahead in opinion polls, said they would scale back their campaign activities.
Dos Santos was said by believers to be the main recipient of prophecies from the Virgin about key 20th century events. The first part of the prophecies saw a vision of hell, the second predicted the outbreak of World War Two.
The Vatican interpreted a third part of the visions as foretelling the attempt to kill the Pope and Communism's persecution of Christianity.
The Church kept the details secret for decades until they was revealed during the Pope's visit to Fatima in 2000.
The other two children, dos Santos' cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, died in 1919 and 1920. The two were beatified, the last step to sainthood, in 2000.
This is kind of weird.http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1343082/posts
I suppose, at one level, is it GOOD that Portugal remembers not just its own, because I hope it's far more than that, but God and His Church - if they do. Because if they do, then the Portuguese are true to themselves and their history. And if so, then the time of mourning really does mean something in a dark continent, where the light of faith seems almost extinguished.
You can "google" and read Cardinal Ratzinger's interpretation of the Third Secret. Judge for yourself :~)
DAMN she was still alive?
I thought she was died long time ago
RIP Sister Lucia
Her brother and sister died in 1919 and 1920. (influenza)
Reuters showed its anti-Catholic bias by calling Sister Lucia a Fatima "seer." Would it have killed them to call her a Fatima "witness"?
*PING*
At least they called her Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, not "Lucia Marto," like the AP did.
Maybe they called her a seer because the apparition spoke of the eventually downfall of communism?

I have seen a picture (painting) of this scenario somewhere. It is breathtaking. Do either of you know of one?
Requiem aeternam dona ei Domine. Et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen.
Anima eius et animae omnium fidelium defunctorum per misericordiam Dei reqiescant in pace. Amen.
Then "click" on "Dr. Petrisko gives talk in Philadelphia about the Third Secret of Fatima and the World Trade Center." Because of the importance of this message, the entire 40 minute talk may be listened to entirely online.
You will see this fantastic painting you mentioned when you "click" Dr. Petrisko....sw

In a May 12 letter to Pope John Paul in 1982, Sister Lucy wrote: "The third part of the secret refers to Our Lady's words: 'If not [consecrated and converted] she (Russia) will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated' (July 13, 1917)... And let us not say that it is God who is punishing us in this way; on the contrary it is people themselves who are preparing their own punishment. In his kindness God warns us and calls us to the right path, while respecting the freedom he has given us; hence people are responsible."
--snip--
Asked in 1980 why the Secret had yet to be released, Pope John Paul II told a German audience:
"Because of the seriousness of its contents, in order not to encourage the worldwide power of Communism to carry out certain coups, my Predecessors in the Chair of Peter have diplomatically preferred to withhold its publication.
"On the other hand, it should be sufficient for all Christians to know this much: if there is a message in which it is said that the oceans will flood entire sections of the earth; that, from one moment to the other, millions of people will perish ... there is no longer any point in really wanting to publish this secret message.
"Many want to know merely out of curiosity, or because of their taste for sensationalism, but they forget that 'to know' implies for them a responsibility. It is dangerous to want to satisfy one's curiosity only, if one is convinced that we can do nothing against a catastrophe that has been predicted."
They were her cousins. They were told that they would not live long but that Lucia would live a very long time.
The body of the youngest, Jacinta, is incorrupt even though it was sprinkled with lime to aid in decomposition.
I hear that story
The brother and sister or cousin died during flu outbreak of 1919 she went into convent couple years later where she spent rest of her life at
Didn't they come out and say there was an asteroid that has a chance of hitting earth in 2029?
Thank you, katana for your kind words. I agree wholeheartedly with you. It's about time that all practicing and sincere Christians join forces to fight the forces of evil in the world.
