It's time to close the golden door (US immigration)
CFP ^ | February 14, 2005 | Henry Lamb

A plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty says:

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

For centuries, people from around the world have accepted this invitation to become a part of America--the great land of freedom and opportunity. Most of these people complied with the law that allowed them to melt into the American culture and become contributors to this great nation.

Now, however, most of the people entering this country do so by ignoring the law, and have no desire to become either Americans, or contributors to the nation. It is time to close the golden door.

No one wants to stop immigration altogether, but it must be controlled. Immigration cannot be controlled until the borders are closed and secure, with entry permitted only to those who have legitimate reason to be here, and then, only for the time specified at the time of entry.

To become an American citizen, an immigrant should learn, and demonstrate facility with the English language. The bi-lingual fad is not a show of compassion - it’s stupid. American taxpayers should not be required to provide written instructions to government services in dozens of languages. This practice is a waste of resources.

Students and workers who enter this country legally, bear the responsibility for their own communications. If they, or their employers are unwilling to bear this responsibility, why should taxpayers be forced to pay? There could be exceptions to this principle to accommodate individuals seeking political asylum, whose life may be in imminent danger, but as a general rule, ability to speak and read English should be . . . . .

While I do not support illegal immigration in any way shape or form, this dog-eared, Nativist rant has been around since the mid-19th Century if not earlier. It's getting very tiresome. The same exact arguments were made against the Irish and other Catholics, Chinese etc. They were wrong then, they're wrong today.

This fool doesn't even have a basic understanding of the requirements to become a US Citizen. From the INS Home Page:

The general requirements for administrative naturalization include:

a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States; residence in a particular USCIS District prior to filing; an ability to read, write, and speak English; a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government; good moral character; attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and, favorable disposition toward the United States.

The door should have been closed 250 years ago, oh wait, then you and the rest wouldn't be here.

It should be left up to the native Americans as to when
the door should be closed. The rest of us have vested
interest in the decision and therefore are disqualified.

I see. I'm a troll because I don't subscribe to a political philosophy that was thoroughly discredited over 150 years ago? Interesting.

Maybe you ought to leave the troll sleuthing to those who can fire more than three neurons at a time.

I am a legal naturalized U.S. citizen and it took me 11 years following the law of the land and filing all appropriate paperwork and filling out endless forms and I had no problem with complying to get the privelege of being a U.S. citizen. When I went for my citizenship test, there were people who clearly could not speak english but had lawyers answering questions on their behalf ! We are letting folks that have no desire of learning english become U.S. citizens. In fact the law of the land in Massachusetts where I live clearly states that "YOU DO NOT HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO READ OR WRITE ENGLISH IN ORDER TO VOTE". This dumbing down of all standards and cultural relatavism will be our downfall if we don't wake up and trample the enemy within.

The code may stipulate an english prerequisite, but it surely isn't enforced.

My MIL and all her retiree friends speak not a word of English, yet all have been given their citizenship. Mostly during the 'Citizenship 2000' initiative. But I've no reason to believe things have gotten any stricter since.

Since reading comprehension doesn't seem to be your strong suit we'll try this once more:

While I do not support illegal immigration in any way shape or form...

Just roll your forehead across your keyboard again if you need further help.

Are you saying that your MIL should have been denied citizenship and kicked out of the country? Novel idea for dealing with the MIL problem, but you better not let your spouse hear you say that!

At one point I was willing to try anything, but even the INS let me down.

BTW my MIL is now a straight line capital D Democrat living in Brooklyn. She might not speak english, but that doesn't mean she can't tell who butters her toast.

Troll - come on you can do better than that - dont speak on from both sides of your mouth. You state that your against illegal immigration but think the author is off base with his argument to stop illegal immigration. Try it again troll.

Your ignorance of our history is your personal problem.

The non-assimilation argument has been advanced and subsequently discounted during every single major wave of immigration without exception. Irish immigrants were "ignorant Catholics" who would depress wages because they work cheaply. You won't have to search long to find political cartoons depicting the Irish with brutish, simian features.

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 made Chinese immigrants ineligible for citizenship until 1943. The National Origins Act of 1924 (I believe) established discriminatory quotas against well, pretty much everybody except those from north west Europe. Presumably, the Irish and Germans were "OK" by that point in time.

The situation in the more recent past has been complicated by our lavish, tax-payer subsidized social service system which is heavily strained by a large influx of unskilled workers primarily from Mexico.

That is my objection to unrestricted immigration.

I will be waiting for your no doubt intelligent rebuttal. Perhaps if you called me a troll again it will make you look like less of an imbecile, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

This is not the 19th Century, and most illegals do not come to these shores "yearning to be free", but rather to bilk the US taxpayer out of his hard earned cash,,,,,and impose some rather dangerous ideas ("Aztlan" and "Islam" come to mind) upon our society.

See "Welcome To The Family…You Stupid Americans " by Resa Laru Kirkland.....and multiply her warnings by several million.

Hmmm troll what past are you talking about - its not happening today? Seems like you are forgetting the facts associated with the influx of European LEGAL immigrants and the ones we face today with illegal primarily Mexican immigrants. I agree that our social service system is taxed thus the reason for the argument. Your feeble attempt to analogize the rhetoric in the past with todays' is just foolish, unfounded and easily disproved. Youve been zotted again - BTW what was your FR name before you were previously banned?

Again you find yourself hamstrung by your complete ignorance. Legal immigrants from Europe? Ever heard the term, wop? Do you know what it means?

You can respond if you would like. It's clear to me that you are a gibbering idiot and I'm wasting my time with the likes of you.

"Wop"??? Yes! Half of my family are "Wops"...who came here legally, passed through Ellis Island, and worked hard to make something of themselves..and AMERICANS of their children in upstate New York.

The situation today is far different.
