The military seems to have a language of its own, with many terms, Acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations that aren't generally used in the "civilian world."

What is an acronym? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words. It is spoken as one word. 

What is an initialism? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words, but each letter is spoken separately. 

What is an abbreviation? It is a shortened version of a word. 

What is Short Speak? It is any and all of the above.

BEFORE I leave to go home, I wanted to tell ya'll a story I heard this morning. A local radio program has an "Adopt A Soldier" program going. This gal called in this morning and told this story. Back in November, she went on the Adopt A Soldier listing because she and her dad were looking for a soldier to adopt and lo and behold there was the boy she had had a crush on in high school. He was stationed in Iraq. So she and her dad decided to adopt him. Over the process of the last couple of months he and she have been corresponding. This morning she got up for work at 4am and everyone at her house was already awake which was really odd. Then when she came downstairs, the parents of this young man were in her living room and her computer was on and so was her webcam. She couldn't figure out what was going on and then the young man came on her screen and PROPOSED TO HER FROM IRAQ!!!! When she said yes, his mom gave her the ring!!!! Is that the awesomest Valentine's story you've ever heard or WHAT??
