Habib: I lied to save myself
Herald Sun ^ | 14th February 2005 | Michael Harvey

FREED terror suspect Mamdouh Habib says he made a series of false confessions while under US torture in Egypt.

Breaking his silence last night, Mr Habib said he admitted to training September 11 hijackers.

He also told interrogators he moved chemicals in Afghanistan for al-Qaida -- all lies made in the hope he would survive torture, Mr Habib said.

"I have nothing true," he said. "Just, I make them happy. I want to save myself."

Speaking in a paid interview with Channel 9's 60 Minutes, Mr Habib said he was tortured with electric shocks, beatings and sexual humiliation involving dogs.

"They use everything possible to make me crazy," he said.

Mr Habib was released from the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, last month without charge. The Australian Government describes him as "remaining of interest in a security sense" and alleges he spent time in Afghanistan and trained with al-Qaida.

Prime Minister John Howard has not ruled out Mr Habib facing charges in Australia.

Mr Habib last night denied advance knowledge of September 11 2001 terrorist attacks, training in al-Qaida camps or moving chemicals in Afghanistan.

He was arrested in Pakistan in October 2001. He says he was flown to Egypt under a CIA-operated program of taking prisoners to countries known to use torture for interrogation.

He said an Australian official watched his torture at a military airport after his arrest in Pakistan.

Mr Habib said he was in Pakistan to look for work and for an Islamic school for his children.

He would not say why he was in Afghanistan.

"I answer this question, I'm telling you, in fully front of the judge," Mr Habib said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer said Mr Habib's Australian passport was cancelled because of ASIO concerns.

The recently freed Mr Habib is believed to have been paid $200,000 for last night's interview.

You know, if someone was being beaten by American servicemen, it would seem to me odd that he would believe that falsely telling them he helped train the September 11 hijackers, would actually make them less likely to continue hurting him.

... or why such testimony is worth $200,000.

The MSM will no doubt run the series and every person in Hollywood will nod in unison whilst mentally chanting "Death to America!"

I have a different chant in mind.

Right out of the terrorists training manual: whenever freed after being held, claim the other side tortured you.

He wont say why he was in Afghanistan? Hmmm...

But according to Mr. Habib, he's guilty of nothing and fingers Americans and Australians in his treatment.

If he wont say why he is in Afghanistan, that should speak to his credibility I'd think.

Habib has no imagination regarding his lies of being tortured. He could only recite the methods associated with Abu-Ghraib. Gee Habib, did they take naked pictures of you too?

Actually, it right out of the Democrat playbook: claim the other side is guilty of the atrocities that you, yourself have committed.

He wont say why he was in Afghanistan?

My guess is that he was there to vacation by the beach.

Afghanistan is well known for its expansive coastline with great surfing and diving conditions that is making it a top tourist destination. ;oP

Let's see, go home to a hut in desert or get $200K to tell the leftist media how horrible the Americans are. That must have been a really difficult decision./sarcasm off (the sarcasm of course presumes that the Jihadists are capable of rational thought)

$200,000 is an unbelievable amount of money for an interview like this. Who is behind Channel 9 and 60 Minutes (which I take to be a CBS ripoff)?

These lies are so obvious, he doesn't even have an inventive imagination. I especially like that bit about sex with dogs.

The NYT left out that claim about dogs "trained" for sexual assault. They figured that they needed to enhance the credibility of Mr Habib by editing his more dubious accusations.

Australia's 60 Minutes is basically a copy of the American CBS program yes - same basic format, same types of imagery.

The Nine Network (Channel 9) is owned by Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) whose majority shareholder is Australia's richest man, Kerry Packer. It's fairly independent of overseas connections, but does engage in some joint ventures (notably ninemsn with Microsoft.)

Politically, Packer is fairly left wing, but really he'll support whichever political position he thinks will make him the most money. Nine bought and broadcast this story because they knew it would rate well - probably not for any great political reasons,
