ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Cheech and Chong may have joked about marijuana in their movies, but the comedians say they didn't touch the stuff when the cameras were rolling.
"We tried one time and we wasted so much film," said Tommy Chong, recalling a scene in "Up in Smoke." "We were in the car waiting for the cue, you know. And the camera's rolling and we're sitting there, you know, and neither one of us heard the cue."
Chong and former partner Cheech Marin appeared together for the first time in 20 years at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival.
Chong said he isn't ashamed of introducing millions of Vietnam-era kids to marijuana. "When you think of how many kids died drinking alcohol, I feel I've saved millions of lives," he said.
Marin said their humor was appreciated by an unexpected group: "Cops were our biggest fans. Because they dealt in what we were dealing with everyday, but in reality... they saw the essential humor and they laughed."
Marin and Chong, who recently completed a nine-month sentence for trying to sell marijuana pipes on the Internet, said they are writing two new films, "Grumpy Old Stoners" and "Lord of the Smoke."
Was the bong oblong, like a dong? Such conduct does not belong, and we must not, um, prolong.
Chong really got screwed. Good to see they are working on a new film. Cheech and Chong are the most under-rated living comedians. They should be elevated to the status of Laurel and Hardy. It was horrifying that cheech ended up on the 'golden girls.' Reminded me of the old story of how moe from the three stooges ended up as a messenger on the studio lot (only not as tragic - at least cheech probably made a lot of cash). I hope they have a rennaisance soon if they can get their projects off the ground.
That's pretty sad if that's all there is to this story. What a wonderful use of federal resources, railroad Tommy Chong and lock him up for selling something I can go buy legally at any number of places in smalltown USA.
That was all I could ever find - prosecuted & incarcerated for selling water pipes over the Internet...the exact same type of pipe that can be used with tobacco.
No prosecution for the small amount of pot that was found.
For that, the man went to jail for 9 months - a longer sentence than some have been given for robbery or rape.
Yep. Just Googled the story, that's pretty much all there is to it. He apparently owned a company with his son that manufactured and distributed glass pipes, then sold them on the net. The Feds apparently found some little-used law that prohibits shipping paraphernalia across state lines. They had there agents put in a massive order and he took the bait, then raided his home and threw the book at him. Totally absurd, he was entrapped.
I think that number is an overestimate, but his point is valid: the legal drug alcohol is a killer, unlike marijuana.

Congress has the power to regulate commerce among the states. That power to regulate includes the power to prohibit.
Deal with it. You don't like the law, change it.
So it is your contention that if marijuana were legal, people would switch from alcohol to marijuana, thereby "saving lives"?
This is contrary to your previous statements that teens would smoke less if marijuana were no longer the "forbidden fruit".
Have people switched from alcohol to pot in the Netherlands where pot is legal? Do you have anything at all to support your contention?
Thank you for pointing out the "again" part. There are those who don't know the history of how the bureaucratic a**es of the department that enforced Prohibition were saved in order to protect America from the evils of hemp.

Yep, Interstate Commerce, like commerce between the states, (i.e.) The State of Texas and the State of New York, which are political subdivisions.
It has nothing to do with the physical boundaries of the geographical locations also known as *States*, OR the people.
It's why the Constitution enumerates our right to UNLIMITED private contract, as well as prohibiting the government from passing laws that impair obligation of contracts.
Educate yourself.

You need to be aware that, from my communications w/ RobertPaulsen, the Drug War is God. He doesn't seem to care what the Constitution says about the federal government's authority for fighting crime, 'cuz he has an agenda of his own.
Yes, he IS correct that Congress has the responsibility to regulate commerce among the states...the US was intended to be a free trade zone, & the federal government's role was to ensure that states wouldn't discriminate betw which other states they will trade w/, or tax their citizens when buying products from out-of-state--but there is a HUGE difference betw "among" & "WITHIN", which seems to make little difference to him. After all, the Drug War worshippers will twist the words of the Constitution into whatever meaning supports their agenda, regardless of what the Founding Fathers intended, because original intent is the obstacle preventing them from achieveing their goal honestly.
When THAT doesn't work, they begin to use court rulings, saying, "Well, in such & such a yr, the Supreme Court said..." (hmmmm...haven't I heard THAT before--by liberals especially? Example: saying the Constitution provides for "the separation of church & state", etc., etc., etc.).

Have to agree. I don't smoke the stuff, and don't condone anyone else doing it, but he got shafted.
BTW: "Cheech and Chong's Greatest Hit" has to be one of the funniest albums ever.
