PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and Mrs. Bush are spending the weekend at the White House. There are no scheduled public appearances.
There was some confusion on FR this week as to whether or not Karl Rove was promoted. He was, in fact, promoted to Deputy White House Chief of Staff. For those interested in the details, here is a link to the daily WH press briefing at which Rove's appointment was discussed in full.
For those who are interested in the Jeff Gannon matter, here's a link to the daily WH press briefing in which this matter was discussed.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The President's schedule for the upcoming week was not announced at the Friday WH press briefing. However, the WH and others did make some announcements during last week about upcoming visits with foreign leaders.
The President will host Romanian President Basescu at the White House on March 9th, 2005.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko is likely to visit Washington next month to hold talks with GWB, the former Soviet republic's Deputy Prime Minister Oleh Rybachuk said.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Aboul Gheit is to meet US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington on Tuesday, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the President's radio address, 2/12/05.
Social Security was created decades ago for a very different era. In 1950, about 16 workers paid into the system for every one person drawing benefits. Today, we have only about three workers for each beneficiary, and over the next few decades, baby boomers like me will retire, people will be living longer and benefits are scheduled to increase dramatically. Eventually, there will be just two workers per beneficiary. With every passing year, fewer workers will be paying ever-higher benefits to ever-larger numbers of retirees.
So here is the result: 13 years from now, in 2018, Social Security will be paying out more than it collects in payroll taxes; and every year afterward will bring a new and larger shortfall. For example, in the year 2027, the government will somehow have to come up with an extra $200 billion a year to keep the system afloat. By the year 2033, the annual shortfall would be more than $300 billion a year. And by the year 2042, the entire system would be bankrupt. If we do not act now to avert that outcome, the only solutions would be dramatically higher taxes, massive new borrowing or sudden and severe cuts in Social Security benefits or other government programs.
To keep the promise of Social Security alive for our children and grandchildren, we need to fix the system once and for all. Fixing Social Security permanently will require a candid review of the options. In recent years, many people have offered suggestions, such as limiting benefits for wealthy retirees; indexing benefits to prices, instead of wages; increasing the retirement age; or changing the benefit formulas and creating disincentives for early collection of Social Security benefits. All these ideas are on the table.
I'll be "seeing" you all during the week - pleasant dreams to all of you in the northern hemisphere!
Good night all. Am off to bed myself. Wonderful dose tonight.
snugs, if you wonder why your pictures don't show, it says you've exceeded your alloted space.
That picture of the VP and Lynne and their granddaughter with W and the First Lady is so precious. It looks like W is pointing to Laura and looking at Grace, probably asking her 'Do you know who this is?' or something equally cute. That look on Dick Cheney's face is just priceless. Could he possibly glow with pride any more?
And Wolfstar, I never thanked you for getting me on the Dose's ping list so, THANK YOU!!
This concerned me.

6. Jihad Watch: Aethelred the Unready Takes the Helm at the State Department
In the year 994, Aethelred began paying off Danish raiding parties rather than fighting them. These payoffs, known as danegeld, continued sporadically until 1012. As English schoolboys used to be able to tell you before their school hours were entirely given over to multicultural studies, the money didn't keep the raiders away, but only brought more. The English came to see that paying tribute was self-defeating: it weakened them while strengthening their enemies -- effectively subsidizing their own demise. It was, as Lenin would put it much later, a case of selling their enemies the rope with which they themselves would be hanged.
If Condoleeza Rice gets her way, the world will learn this lesson anew. The new Secretary of State is reportedly pursuing a proposal to raise money for danegeld, er, that is, a pension fund for jihad terrorists who promise to stop murdering people. Israel National News states that Rice "has proposed a $100 monthly allowance to terrorists who agree to lay down their arms and retire or find another profession. The money would be part of a $350 million package deal announced by U.S. President George Bush this past week. The Bush administration suggested that Congress consent to send $41 million immediately for an 'immediate impact in support of democratic transition.'. Rice, about to pay her first visit to the Middle East in her new position as successor to Colin Powell, wants part of the money to go directly to 'retired' terrorists. Speaking between visits to European countries, she proposed a pension fund for at least 1,000 terrorists." The International Herald Tribune also spoke of plans for "retirement benefits for members of Palestinian militias."

**snugs, if you wonder why your pictures don't show, it says you've exceeded your alloted space. **
Which picture did not show I can see them all. One I did need to click on show picture when I refreshed the page but apart from that I could see them.
214 and 230 did not show last night even after I did a View Image. Today 214 shows after I do a View Image, but 230 does not. HTH.
I LOVE that picture of the Cheneys and the Bush's with the Perry granddaughter on Dick's lap.
That is a lovely one of Grace on the VP's lap he does look so proud I often wonder if deep down he never thought he would live to see these gorgeous grandchildren maybe not a conscious thought but deep within his subconscioius mind so hence the wonderful looks that come which I am certain without him even thinking about it.
Well that picture shows up even when I refresh but problem still with 230 though I can see if I click on show image.
Oh, that's another lovely picture I've never seen. I think W especially likes Grace, don't you? That oldest granddaughter is just gorgeous, she is going to be a stunningly beautiful woman, I think.
Somebody has a LOT of fun dressing those girls, I tell you. They always have the cutest clothes on. And what stories they are going to have to tell about their childhood, being the first grandchildren! It's really wonderful that the Cheneys have them doing so many things, like walking in the Inaugural parade. I can't help thinking that is one of the real perks for Dick in the job, that his grandchildren get to see and do so many wonderful things. And his daughters, too, but to a lesser degree. But I'm sure the heat that Mary takes is a downer on the other side.
You may well be right about why Dick seems to adore his grandchildren so much (although he probably just loves children too). I'm sure he's doubly appreciative of the time he gets with his family.
I'm clueless on what's causing the photo problems, snugs. It has to be something on the hosting end, though. Now I can't even see the last picture you posted.
