Democrats shun the red states (EDITORIAL in Austin American Statesman)

EDITORIAL BOARD

Saturday, February 12, 2005

All in all, it's been a pretty good couple of sports seasons for New England teams. Boston wins the World Series, and the Patriots win another Super Bowl. New England pols, however, are about to go 1-1 when Vermont's governor becomes head of the Democratic National Committee this weekend.

The loss was, of course, the one U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, racked up in the 2004 presidential race.

Oh, well, you can't win 'em all.

Republicans are rather gleeful about the prospect of Dean taking over the national Democratic apparatus. Some Democrats are as well, figuring that Dean is like chicken soup: It might not cure you, but it can't hurt.

Normally, the head of the Democratic National Committee is a relatively low-profile organizing and fund-raising job. But even if Dean weren't hungry for attention — anyone who runs for president is no shrinking violet — he'd get plenty. Republicans will see to that.

All Dean's quaint and curious ways, however, will paper over what his expected elevation to head the national committee means to the Southwest, where the bulk of the nation's population growth is focused. By choosing Dean, Democrats are turning their backs on not only the fastest growing areas in the country, but a lot of up and coming young talent throughout Texas, New Mexico, California, Colorado and the rest of the region.

All but California are red states, so Democrats have been writing them off for a while now. Democrats running for national office come in, scoop up some money and leave.

If that's a strategy, fine, but then Democrats should surrender whining rights when the red states in the Southwest get redder.

This sentence says it all. The DUmmy crowd keeps giving money to a losing party.

That's our prayer!

Please keep ignoring those red states, dems, and don't look at that map and see where all the electoral votes were in the last election. Means nothing. Those states don't have electors, or reps or senators, that you won't. I think this is a very intelligent course of action--keep at it! (Oh, and there are a few barely-blue states you might want to consider ignoring, too.)

The dems seem to think collecting campaign money is their entire purpose now, and end in itself.

Beautiful,

The liberal American Stateman gets is right and warns the RATS that they have etabvlished a beach-head in parts of NE--while throwing away much of the rest of the country.

Its nice to see a few liberal rags actually show milliseconds of reality and a few neuron firings worth of cogent thought.

I think they deserve a few congratulatory emails on being right on the mark on this.

This sentence says it all. The DUmmy crowd keeps giving money to a losing party.

Soon they won't even have to sully themselves by coming down. They can just send it in over the internet.

I have been suspicious that this much ballyhooed fund raising over the internet, for the Dems, is just another underhanded way to launder money from Soros, Lewis, the Hollywood crowd, et al.

The Republicans should not be complacent about some of those red states in the Southwest...New Mexico was close enough in 2000 for the Democrats to steal, and Bush's victory there in 2004 was too close for comfort. Nevada is filling up with former Californians and elected Harry Reid to the Senate.

How long before some of their yellow-dog constituencies begin to drift toward the party that has the power to do something?

Perhaps the democrat shunning of the red states is over? Could be! Ol' "Angry White Male" himself, AKA Howard Dean is now the DNC "ChairPerson" (a VERY PC term). Maybe he will kick it up a notch.

I appreciate the dems "choosing" their new leader by the other candidates dropping out. This clearly demonstrates to me how poorly the democrats understand Democracy!

that newspaper sux.

i call it "the austin un-american stateswoman".

it's run by feminists and anti-bush people.

they almost had riots in the streets of downtown austin before the nov election, after the cox family exercised their endorsement of dubya.

the leftists laying down in the streets and running wild couldn't comprehend the 180 degree flip from daily leftism to dubya.
