Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice yesterday challenged France to let bygones be bygones and launch "a new chapter" as she took her whirlwind charm-offensive tour to Paris, a hotbed of opposition to the U.S.-led Iraq war.
"It is time to turn away from the disagreements of the past. It is time to open a new chapter in our relationship, and a new chapter in our alliance," she urged in Paris in the biggest speech of her weeklong trip.
....
She stressed Bush's policy of seeking to spread freedom throughout the world and discreetly skipped over disagreements about Iraq to stress the success of Iraq's elections, which even Chirac has praised.

As I watched excerpts of Secretary Rice's speech in France, I was impressed by how quietly powerful she is.

The only other woman secretary of state, Madeleine Albright in the Clinton era used to try to send messages by wearing big shiny brooches but Rice chose a deliberately low-key style in the city that sees itself as the fashion world's home.
She wore a simple, understated black suit and black shell with a single strand of white pearls as she sought to lay the groundwork for President Bush's trip to Europe in two weeks.
Class. Nothing but class.

does she speak french? She does, and she did. But didn't give it an overly French accent: "Liberte, Equalite, Fraternite."

While the speech was impressive, her answers to questions afterwards were brilliant. I've been around a while and have never seen any public figure speak so skillfully. She has the knowledge, personality and intelligence to be a magnificent Secretary of State.

Condoleeza Rice reminds me of Margaret Thatcher in her prime. She could be President so easily the Dems may as well not vote! ;-)
