"Deep Throat's" Identity May be Revealed Soon.
ABC GMA | 9 Feb 05 | ABC News

Posted on 02/09/2005 4:43:27 AM PST by MindBender26

On first segment of GMA, Charlie Gibson reported that Bob Woodward told his former WaPost editors that Deep Throat is seriously ill.

This is important because "Woodstein" have always promised to reveal the identity of Deep Throat on his death.

Various rumors have circulated about the real name of the man who brought down the Nixon administration. Fred Fielding, Al Haig, L. Patrick Gray, even a young G.H.W.B. have all been mentioned, along with dozens of others.

There was even some specualtion that Deep Throat might have been former DOJ offical William Renquist.... and we all know he is ill.

The only other public persona known to be ill is the Pope.... and I think we can rule him out.,,, but of course someone else from that era might be ill without the public knowing about it.

So, will we soon know the identity of Deep Throat?

Stay tuned to your local FReeper station!

You have to admit it has a real 'Who shot JR' feel to it.

Yeah. Almost everybody remembers the whole "who shot JR" hype. The thing is, most people don't remember who it finally turned out to be*, now do they?

It's like, prior to the Tom Hanks movie, I could mention the Apollo 13 accident and get blank stares from 9 out of 10 people I mentioned it to.

Welcome to short attention span theater.

*Kristen Shepherd shot JR. She was played by Mary Crosby... yes, Bing's daughter

Right. Ford didn't live in an apartment, but Bob Dole lived at the Watergate during that period, I believe. Dole has been quite ill (almost died) since his recent fall. W&B also stated that Deep Throat was a smoker and drank scotch.
Dole is a former smoker. Does anyone know if he's a scotch drinker?

He will be whoever Woodhead decided he would be and of course dead men tell no tales.

Woodhead has had along time to fix his story.

In DC, you drink Scotch, or know Bill W., or both.

I despise Ford. That guy is a commie. He was such a fop and foil for the Democrats and was the original RINO. He rarely stood up to the Crats and spent most of his time fighting with conservatives. Out of office he did the same thing.

Aside from the Mayaguez Incident I never agreed with a single thing he did. I supported Reagan in the primaries and voted for sleazy Jimmy in the general.

Ford was always a traitor to our side. Wouldn't be at all surprised if it was him.

I have never liked Ford. I think that you may be on to something

The person who was Deep Throat would have been lauded loved and honored by the media. Yet Jerry Ford went into the 1976 election painted by the media and the Democrats as the man who had made a deal to be president. Much of the public believed that Ford was a Nixon guy who was made Vice President by Nixon in return for a promise to pardon Nixon. Ford failed to convince enough voters that he had pardoned Nixon for the good of the nation.

If it had been revealed before the 1976 Election that Ford had been Deep Throat.. Ford would have been the wonderful man who was responsible for bringing Nixon down. Had Ford Been Deep Throat there was no way to paint Ford as Nixon's puppet, unless you believed that Nixon wanted to get caught. Ford revealed as Deep Throat would have been elected president in 76 and Carter would have gone down in defeat. If Ford was deep throat you have to believe that Ford did not want to be elected president in 1976. That is just crazy. If Ford had been deep throat he would have leaked the story himself during the 1976 campaign.

The big problem for Deep Throat credibility is he is painted as someone who knew what Nixon had done in the coverup. Remember there was no proof that Nixon had done anything himself other than the tapes.. Nixon was accused of covering up for those who worked for him. So Deep throat had to have direct knwoledge of what went on in the White House. Deep throat had to want Nixon taken down. Why leak bad stuff about Nixon if you don't want him caught.

So if deep throat knew what the Nixon coverup was doing, why didn't deep throat tell Woodward about the Nixon tapes. Everyone working in the white house knew about nixon taping all conversations in the oval office. But Deep Thoat never told Woodward about the tapes. Why? It was a relatively low level person on the white house staff who revealed the existance of the Nixon tapes in testimoney before congress. The media knew nothing about the existanc of takes prior to the testimoney before congress of a Nixon Staffer.

It was the one piece of information that brought Nixon down. Without the tapes there was no proof that Nixon did anything wrong. Yet Deep Throat supposedly on the inside in the Nixon administration never told Woodward about the tapes.

The only conclusion that makes sense is that Deep Throat was not the source of much if any useful information becuase Deep Throat did not know what was going on .. The most likely conclusion based on what we now know about woodwards use of fake sources is Deep throat was a figment of Woodwards imagination.

The other problem with deep throat his how does John Dean know who deep throat is. Did Dean know when he testified before congress? Did John Dean know there was a mole when he was atill Nixon's lawyer?

When did Dean learn Deep Throat's identity? Over the decades Woodward, Bernstein and Bradley have told us over and over that only 4 people know the identity of Deep Throat. They were Woodward, Bernstein, Bradley, and Deep Throat himself. Which one of them told John Dean Deep Throat's identityu?

ONe final thought Woodward and Bernstein put in their book that Deep Throat was a chain smoker. Ford never smoked and lots of others thought to be Deep Throat have never smoked.

One other point why would Woodward say they will not reveal who deep throat is until Deep Throat is dead. Have you ever met someone who does cares a lot about what people think of him when he is alive but does not care once he is dead.

On the other hand it is likely that a real deep throat would want to be known because he would be a hero to much of the nation. Can you imagine someone saying... I don't want to be a hero while I am alive... I prefer to wait until I am dead to be kown as a hero.

Most of the Deep Throat story makes no sense...unless it is a fabrication to make the pure guesses printed by Woodward and Bernstein as fact appear to be based on a real source.

Woodward has been caught printing what he thinks has happened and then inventing a fake sources for his story.

Woodward is the guy that said he interviewed William Casey when hospital and doctors records say Casey was in a comna from which he never recovered before his death. Doctors, Nurses, and family all say Casey was comatose before and after the date and time Woodward says Casey confessed to him what he had done as CIA chief. Woodward claims that casey had chosen to confess to him on his death bed. Wooodward apparnetly dod not know that Casey spent his final days comatose and brain dead.

Woodard has a history of quoting dead men as his source. The dead make wonderful sources for guesses printed as sourced fact. Dead people be they Casey or Deep Throat can't contradict the words put in their mouths.

Bob Dole was also Republican National Chairman during Nixon's second run in '72. He was in a position, unlike Ford, to know what was going on inside the campaign.

NORE: This from John Dean:

I have little doubt that one of my former Nixon White House colleagues is history's best-known anonymous source — Deep Throat. But I'll be damned if I can figure out exactly which one.

We'll all know one day very soon, however. Bob Woodward, a reporter on the team that covered the Watergate story, has advised his executive editor at the Washington Post that Throat is ill. And Ben Bradlee, former executive editor of the Post and one of the few people to whom Woodward confided his source's identity, has publicly acknowledged that he has written Throat's obituary.

Without confidential sources, much of what people need to know in a democracy would never be reported, so unless there is a higher reason, journalists must be able to protect such sources who are willing to impart such information. That said, no news person should agree to provide confidentiality unless it is essential to obtain information that the public should be told and there is no other way to obtain the information. A scoop per se does not justify a pledge of confidentiality.

As for Deep Throat, well, we will all soon learn if Woodward has been protecting a criminal for three decades, or merely a source who gave him some good information and some bad information — when history's greatest source was wrong — that Woodward has never corrected. (To pick just one of Throat's many errors, I randomly opened "All the President's Men," scanned until I came to the passage in which Woodward reports Throat as giving him this: "Dean talked with Sen. [Howard] Baker after [the] Watergate committee [was] formed and Baker is in the bag completely, reporting back directly to the White House." It never happened.)

I suspect that Throat's identity may prove a cautionary tale for all news gatherers. Stay tuned.

I wouldn't put too much stock in this story. Yeah, they could just name some recently deceased Nixon minion -- but then they have to be sure that that person could have plausibly known everything they sourced to Deep Throat, or they're busted (and reveal that "Deep Throat" = "I Made It Up").

Your tag line should be common sense. Now that you have laid it all out, I see your point. Who knows if this was a real person or not. Personally I believe that Nixon had moral values and was truly sorry for the cover up.

Nixon would probably not have been impeached.

Having grown up in Whittier, Calif. I always looked up to our high school alumni, and was disappointed at the way things turned out.

Strong point, but with Nixon firing Dole unceremoniously, and installing Bush as the RNC head, Dole might have had an axe to grind. Also, I've read that Dole was put out with the very idea of CREEP, as it diluted his power.
