O'Malley Likens Bush's Proposed Cuts to Sept. 11 Attacks (outrageous)
The Washington Post ^ | February 9, 2005 | Lori Montgomery

Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley yesterday compared President Bush's proposed budget cuts to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, saying that Bush, like the al Qaeda hijackers who crashed planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, has launched an assault on America's cities.

"These cuts, ladies and gentlemen, are sad. Irresponsible. They are also dishonest," O'Malley (D) told a packed news conference at the National Press Club, where mayors and area officials had gathered to decry Bush's plan to slash spending on community development programs by $2 billion.

"Back on September 11, terrorists attacked our metropolitan cores, two of America's great cities. They did that because they knew that was where they could do the most damage and weaken us the most," O'Malley said. "Years later, we are given a budget proposal by our commander in chief, the president of the United States. And with a budget ax, he is attacking America's cities. He is attacking our metropolitan core."

Those present appeared to be a bit stunned by the comparison. Afterward, one reporter asked O'Malley to explain his "inflammatory rhetoric." D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D), who also serves as president of the National League of Cities, said he disagreed with "the harsh language that was used," though he declined to criticize O'Malley directly. Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan (D) said O'Malley's remarks "went way too far."

"The president of the United States is fighting terrorism. It hurts our cause when people say things like that," said Duncan, who, like O'Malley, is expected to seek the Democratic nomination in the 2006 race against Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R).

If O'Malley's fellow Democrats were abashed by his remarks, Maryland Republicans were appalled.

As a Maryland resident I am not sure I want to return. I am thrilled we have republican Gov. and OMalley is the Baltimore City Mayor so I should just ignore -- but I can't when this civil servant makes hideous remarks like this.

So freerepublic poster and rumor is worthy of A1, but the same mayor saying President Bush is like Al Qaeda is worthy of A5?

The citizenry often makes do with less, it's about time the politicians do too. STFU.

How DARE this person attempt to diminish the horrors of September 11th by trying to equate the attacks and subsequent deaths of 3,000 Americans to a few budget cuts!!

Thoroughly disgusting!!

Sort of like gay marriage activists comparing states banning gay marriage to slavery. That just shows a complete lack of compassion and understanding of the horrors some black Americans went through.

Personally friends I am happy to see this. As an engineer I understand feedback in a system and how feedback can create an unstable system that shakes itself apart.

Witness now the Tacoma bridge in the 2 or 3 swings before busting to pieces. This is the democrat party.

Furthermore, there is no leftist idealogical reinforcement or better design to achieve stabilization. The only way to stabilize the lefts postion is to remove liberty. Ain't gonna happen.

If I were cynical, I'd say the release of the story on page A01 was meant to deflect attention from O'Malley's idiotic comments on page A05, and gain sympathy for the mayor. After all, he was wondering how to "deal with" the rumors. This all seems very McGreevey-like to me.

By the way, I'm sure the families of the 3000+ people who died at the World Trade Center, in the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania would LOVE to know that a budget "cut" is equivalent to 9/11.

This guy ought to get together with Churchill and run for President if he thinks this type of b--- s--t will sell.

He should be removed from office for that unconscionable comment.

Unfortunately, given the situation at the State House, either O'Malley or Duncan have the next election virtually wrapped up. Busch and Miller have successfully created the image that all the problems they (MD Dems) create, are Erlich's fault. Most recently the HMO tax. Also see Vehicle registration fees.

What situation are ya talking about alone? Busche has serious problems with public opinion and slots legislation. The Dem house and senate of the state just got smacked in the face by the HMO's that they are crying "who knew". O'Malley is facing problem after problem here in Baltimore City while facing a murder a day rate. Duncan has the only chance if he does not have to face a mudsling with O'Malley but he is not known that well in the state. Ehrlich's approval rating is too high to challenge and the Dems made a really bad mistake of bringing the rumor mill to the forefront.
