Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley yesterday accused agents of Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s administration of spreading false rumors that he had an extramarital affair, and Ehrlich responded hours later by dismissing a longtime employee.
The mayor, a Democrat considering a bid for governor in 2006, said he believes that the widespread and persistent rumors were part of a "concerted and orchestrated and sustained" effort and called on the Republican governor to apologize to his wife and children. "I don't think any of us run for office expecting that this sort of hurt will be heaped on our kids or our spouses," O'Malley said.
Ehrlich said an apology was premature and denied any personal involvement in spreading the rumor. He then asked for and received the resignation of Joseph Steffen, a longtime aide working in state government. Steffen confirmed yesterday that he had discussed the rumor on a popular conservative Web site and in private e-mails, which were given to The Washington Post.

You're right it wasn't his post.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my miscellaneous ping list.
Well, well, look who came out of lurker mode to add her usual snotty post.
Gee, I didn't know that. His father-in-law is a real bonehead though.
FYI .. the loons monitor FR all the time and sometimes brag about it on their sites
"How in the world did they find out he was NCPAC?"
No one can figure that out.
What can I say other than the Governor had no knowledge whatsoever of any postings on FR. For the record, I offered to resign before being asked to do so. And, no, I have not spoken directly with the Governor about any of this.
The Baltimore Sun will be running a piece on this as well on Wednesday. They called Tuesday night and were ready to pin the whole thing on the Governor, and I couldn't let that happen because it simply isn't true. The Governor had no knowledge of anything involving O'Malley or the "rumors."
Also, the Baltimore Sun has a list of FReepers they read off to me to see if I was "also" posting under those screen names. I don't remember all of them, but CrushKerry was one.
It's been one wild ride, FRiends.
It's on the second page of the article. FreeRepublic is blue and underlined, all you have to do is click on it.
WRONG!
READ #46.
Ehrlich said an apology was premature and denied any personal involvement in spreading the rumor.
Way to go!!! These demorats demanding apologies is getting really old. Have they never heard the term "suck it up"?
What every Republican wants - an endorsement from a leftist nutjob.
Yeah, but even so, they're not going to know that Mo1 = Harry Balz from Omaha, Nebraska. Someone has to tell them who you are, or give them enough information so they can make the connection.
So you are admitting that what you did was wrong?
Why did you do it, then?
I knew you'd want to be wrong on this one...lol.
Good job, NCPAC!!!!multiple recipients)

Superb comment to MM.
Well, good luck my friend. It's nice to see someone take the bullet. I'm not to up to speed on the whole rumor thing, but at least you did the honorable thing - something the Washington Post and the liberals will never understand.
Will you let us know how they outted you when you do get to the bottom of this? And hang in there. You've been around poltics long enough to know that things eventually blow over. It sucks now, but you'll land on your feet.
