Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley yesterday accused agents of Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s administration of spreading false rumors that he had an extramarital affair, and Ehrlich responded hours later by dismissing a longtime employee.
The mayor, a Democrat considering a bid for governor in 2006, said he believes that the widespread and persistent rumors were part of a "concerted and orchestrated and sustained" effort and called on the Republican governor to apologize to his wife and children. "I don't think any of us run for office expecting that this sort of hurt will be heaped on our kids or our spouses," O'Malley said.
Ehrlich said an apology was premature and denied any personal involvement in spreading the rumor. He then asked for and received the resignation of Joseph Steffen, a longtime aide working in state government. Steffen confirmed yesterday that he had discussed the rumor on a popular conservative Web site and in private e-mails, which were given to The Washington Post.

most excellent.well stated..thanks..
Did you make any Freepmail comments to anyone about the situation or is this based entirely on your comments to someone else's thread?
Same way Buckhead was identified.
O'Malley? Is this the same guy who just compared the president's budget to a terrorist attack?
Very interesting. Last night O'Reilly was blasting the internet for being a rumor mill, which it can be, but bogus postings to FR get busted pretty fast.
Hints of MSM agendas?
He couldn't possibly think that a politician is not going to have rumors spread about him. It's a dem pasttime.
It is puzzling how THE IDENTITY OF POSTERS on Free Republic seems to be easily accessible. Of course, Free Republic posters should not post unfounded or false rumors about anyone.
I suppose we will find out soon enough whether or not this allegation about the affair is true. If it is, I would question whether or not the aide was treated fairly by either the Mayor or the Governor. While we on Free Republic have the responsibility of posting accurately, public officials in turn cannot be allowed to indulge in indiscretions which become common knowledge within their little circles but then proceed to destroy the lives of any subordinate who divulges their indiscretion.
Probably a cookie on his computer.
Seems to me no one needs to spread untrue rumors about this guy ~ I'd start checking out what his wife, the judge, has been doing to provide direct assistance to the Islamofascists, and then bring the entire force of the government to bear on both of them.
bump
Has anyone actually bothered to ask the mayor if he's screwed around on his wife? If so, what was the mayor's reply?
And, finally...
Dear Washington Post, Baltimore Sun: Bite me.
Sorry about all this, NCPAC. Hope a better door opens for you.
It sounds like the media is intimately involved in politics again, huh? - They seem only to be interested in free speech for liberals.

Senator Grassley has a couple of staffers who've spent entirely too much time on government computers trying to track me down.
I don't know whether anyone has asked the Mayor or not. I suppose since the rumor has now become news, perhaps more unbiased reporters will dig deeper.
Well, are the "rumors" true, or were you just smearing the guy?
Upon further reading this thread, I retract my question regarding a smear job. Good luck.
I like the conspiracy theory better. Same game as they play....ooooo, forget that!
I heard of this story but it wasn't on FR - it was from a city worker close to the police. This "rumor" is the best-known secret in Baltimore. I think O'Malley protesteth too much.
