Last Friday when promoting social security reform with 'regular' citizens in Omaha, Nebraska, President Bush walked into an awkward unscripted moment in which he stated that carrying three jobs at a time is 'uniquely American.'
While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a 'mentally challenged' son.
The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that 'the promises made will be kept by the government.'
But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.
Begin transcript:
MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.
THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?
MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.
THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

You are exactly the type of person that gives conservatism a bad name. You aren't happy that she's busting her ass to provide for her family and you damn sure wouldn't be happy with the alternative of her collecting welfare. Your little mind resides in a utopia that doesn't exist.
What is Drudge's handle over at Liberty Post?
You are so right that we don't know enough about this lady's circumstances to judge. The Dems don't know either.
Here's another plausible scenario (it's real). One of my friends worked three jobs while her kids were in school. She was a teacher's aide (so she worked the same hours that her kids were in school), she was a clerk in a store on week-ends when her kids were with their father, and she sold Avon products.
She could have had one better job, but it wouldn't have meshed with the kids' schedule so well.
Americans really do have more job flexibility than most others do.
Thank you. You're making the point I was trying to make, but put it more concisely!!
if i am....i don't know it.
Trust me, you're not alone.
No. 1 That was a time of "one job" supported a family - that time has been long gone, for the most part
No,2 The 'grandmothers' stayed home - i.e., no monstrous day care costs...
I raised 4 on my own - and don't give me your c*ap about birth control - I didn't PLAN on finding myself on my own, years after my last one was born. Life happens. We are not all as lucky - or smart - as you obviously are.
Many women's jobs STILL do not pay equal - and day care is outrageous, so what even a single mother makes, she has to make an extra $100+ a WEEK to cover day care.
I drove an early morning school bus run, then managed a furniture store, did bookkeeping for another business and worked 2 nights and Saturdays in Macy's - to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.
thank your lucky stars you didn't have to face the same sort of situation...
it is uniquely American that we can provide enough jobs for people to do this if that's what they choose.
I couldn't agree more. I know more than one person who has a personally tailored job situation, and that's a freedom that only Americans do have.
But the Left still like the old model of the "company" dictating the rules of our employment and being obligated to care for all our needs that aren't met by the gov't.
Conservatives are like butterflies - they have a sense of where their wings can take them. Dems are like caterpillars afraid to leave the cocoon. :-)
The stupid and lazy French will never understand this. Al they know is how to enjoy extended lunches, wine at every meal and very long vacations.
If working is so good, why to retire?
No need - the state school and after hours programs will raise the children. And some day the freemarketeers will send children to do honest labour as it used to be in XIX century. Much better than the expensive schooling!!!
Good angle/observation.
My primary job and the one I enjoy the most is designing ladies underwear (lingerie as the lady's call it). It may sound strange but when I was a kid my mom bought a sewing machine and while I had several sisters I was the only one able to figure out how the sewing machine works. My most recent work includes most of the EMMA line Victoria Secrets sells.
Besides this, I'm a graphics artist for lotteries. I design scratch off tickets for several states. In Texas I designed the "Hot Streak" and "Weekly Grand" tickets.
After I started doing the underwear designing thing the other guys I was friends with kept making gay jokes about me so I started chewing tobacco. So, my third job which I don't do much anymore is blending the stuff. If you ever try Skoal Berry blend I came up with it.
I've done other stuff over the years much more interesting than this but I can't post anything about it here.
Liberals will never let decency, common sense or reality stand in the way of their hate for this president. It's eating them up inside like a virus that they keep feeding more and more hate. They are furious that a person they labeled a dumb chimp is able to outsmart them and whoop their ass time after time.If the day comes when Iraq is deemed a historical success for George W Bush I wouldn't be surprised if they committed mass suicide like some death cult. What a big bunch of losers they are.
How much does he make per hour???
Add me to the list. What kind of life is this woman having? Struggling on subsistance wages at three jobs is not "uniquely American" but rather it is just how desparate some people are to make ends meet. Of course, the president, and all the other pols wouldn't know this they are so far disconnected from the average American worker.
One should WORK TO LIVE and not live to work. This miserable near socialist government has us as its slaves and will continue to rob us every chance it is allowed to have.
Pssst, it's not a disgrace at all but compliance to government's expectations of our role in life, which is to be income producers for the spendthrifts in public office ;-)
Thank you for the post.
