Bush: Holding three jobs "Uniquely American"
Drudge Report ^ | 2-8-2005 | Hand Em Their Arse

Last Friday when promoting social security reform with 'regular' citizens in Omaha, Nebraska, President Bush walked into an awkward unscripted moment in which he stated that carrying three jobs at a time is 'uniquely American.'

While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a 'mentally challenged' son.

The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that 'the promises made will be kept by the government.'

But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.

Begin transcript:

MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

but I'm wondering where planned parenthood was in all this. With her three jobs she couldn't afford contraception?

It said she was divorced.

I wasn't speaking of her specifically, I was just trying to point out that different people do things for different reasons. The 3 jobs she has may well be part time so that she can spend more time with her children, and some may well be seasonal, meaning that they don't all overlap so you're working 3 jobs at all the same time. I see many single parents working for the sports teams since it is only a limited number of days or evenings, and only in a specific season. Actually those type of jobs provide some flexibility since you can choose when you work, and with both the theatre and the sports teams they don't have work available seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Just trying to provide alternate views. Don't shot the messenger!!

The wording came off wrong but agree. His intent was to say that in America, we want the best for ourselves and our kids and will work to obtain our dreams.

I work 65 hours a week and own a company. Although I wish it were easier sometimes, I have a nice house, plenty of food and my kids have everything I never got. America is indeed the land of opportunity.

My husband works three jobs. One full time, one part time and one side job. Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with it. It's called personal responsibilty. Your comment was asinine.

In the 1940's and 50's it was possible to raise a family of 7 on one middle-class salary. It is not possible today.

We actually don't know whether the lady works part time jobs on those three. If each for 1/2 time, she has 1.5 x 40 = 60 hrs per week. I seriously doubt that she has 3 full time jobs. Also, keep in mind that there are some part-time jobs that need only 10 hrs per week. So, the total hours per week may be about the same as regular hours (around 40 hrs).

These are only some possibilities, though. I cannot get more information from the article.

When I was in college I knew a guy that had three jobs AND was in college. He's right it is uniquely American, we do what we must.

That's what I was referencing in #11.

You posted as I was researching, trying find a suitable pic of Wayons in character of the Jamaican. I tried to get back even without the pic, but you were too quick!

I thank my lucky stars that my life is filled with people willing to do whatever it takes and then some to take care of what they need to. And, for the caps key.

Which is exactly why the birthrate has gone down. The only people who can afford to have babies are the people on welfare. That's where the birthrate is going to!

Exactly.

Also, she has three kids. I suspect they're the ones losing out in a big way.

"This has Liberal field day written all over it. Unfortunatley, the praising we was giving this woman (who frankly sounds like a wonderful lady) is going to be lost in the "see what she has to do just to get by" crowd..."

Good prediction.

And 3 jobs? Bit much, eh? 2's fine enough for me.
