WASHINGTON -- Tuesday The new Bush Administration in the US is unlikely to invest much effort in resolving the problems of Kosovo, an associate of the Nixon Centre said today.
Nicholas Gvozdev told The Voice of America that the administration will be focused on Iraq and Afghanistan.
The US says that it is opposed to any kind of change of borders in the Balkans. I think that this position is a vague formulation of the problem because it is not a Kosovos borders that are to be changed but its states and respect for Resolution 1244 which takes for presupposes its autonomy but not any change of borders, he added.
Gvozdev says that Washington is keen not to show support for any change in the political structures of the Balkans, which is understandable taken the situation in Iraq into account.
You cant back the integrity of Iraq and pressuring the Kurds not to demand independence but to seek autonomy within Iraq, you cant allow and justify the break-up of Serbia-Montenegro on an ethnic basis and the regional separatism of Kosovo Albanians.
In Kosovo and other parts of the Balkans, the politics of expectation prevails, which means that if the US doesnt support the resolution of the final status today, then that issue can be debated for three or five years, by which time all sides are exhausted by the problem, he added.
Bush should sit back and wait.
The UN has dealt with it...its called UN resolution 1244. Its just the Kosovar islamic radicals calling for independence and possibily joining Albania Proper. There is NO way the US could support that in light of Taiwan, and Kurds in iraq. We'd look hypocritical.
I don't see what the big news here is? We have maintained all along that Kosovo is, and shall remain Serbian.
The big news is our troops there and the threat of re-newed violence because of secessionists there of the violent islamic origin. This is just a warning for a conflict that will arise again either violent or diplomatic which i would like the US to stay out of.
It's the EU's mess. Let them sort it out.
Not very pro active, if radical Islam gains a foothold there, how long before terrorists are using this as a staging ground to attack the USA?
Chirac can use diplomacy to solve all problems/sarcasm.
Detroit is a potential staging ground, not Kosovo. Muslims are quickly taking over EU members. Why would they rely on a back-water like the Balkans for strength against the US?
Because Kosovo unlike Detroit is out of reach of federal powers to appropriate finances and seize assets. It is also out of the reach of Homeland Security. Islamic terrorists can train in peace and quiet and funnel goods and weapons that they require in the USA from that logistical base. This is happening as we speak in Spain, Germany and France as well as the UK. part of the funding for 9/11 was funneled through Spain for instance. The security services are kicking in doors and making arrests in those countries on a month by month basis. We can deal with it now or later.......
I dont think radical islam will gain a foothold in Kosovo...but the alleged islamic links to terrorists, narco-trafficking, prostitution rings by the KLA and the fact that US foreign policy with the Kurds in Iraq and Taiwan will be comprimised...Its just incoceivable to me that the US would be active with Kosovo becoming independent. Our foreign policy with the EU, and middle east is far more important than Kosovo.
Ohhh well it must be true now....
If Radical Islam gets a foothold there it'll still be the EU's problem first.
"Detroit is a potential staging ground, not Kosovo. Muslims are quickly taking over EU members. Why would they rely on a back-water like the Balkans for strength against the US?"
He's partly right..and so is Kelly. Did you know that the State Department has given funds to a group called the National Albanian American Council that has a few memebers that have allegedly raised funds for the Islamic Iranian regime in 1979 when US hostages were taken?
That depends on what the intelligence agencies know is happening in Kosovo that we as civilians do not know. They are treating this issue as strategically important to prioritize things in this manner IMO
Nicholas Gvozdev is a well respected international affairs analyst. I suggest you do research on his publications.
No thanks not interested. It's still not a regional problem to us and not in our immediate interest.
But radical Islam is targeting the USA not the EU so whose problem do YOU think this should be on that basis?
I am albanian myself, and i have a deep understanding of that situation.
The KLA has been involved in narcotics, prostitution rings, arms dealing, etc etc. They have had islamic radicals from the middle east as elite fighting groups and so on..but the Clinton admin told them to evict those types to get US help at the time.
Fact is, the KLA radicalized the conflict to bring in the west as soon as possible knowing that they could not match up with the serbian army. My only problme with the KLA is its alleged fundamental islamic links and arms dealing. Post 9/11, the politics of the world has changed and unfortunately for them, they are sitting outside of the gates.
I guess you didn't hear about the train bombing in Spain and the car bombs in Turkey and the various muslim violence in France and Germany.
