Two Long Island teens, heading home from a birthday party, were killed on the Southern State Parkway yesterday when an SUV traveling in the opposite direction careened into a median, launched into the air and landed on top of their car.
Promising student Luis Alfaro, 19, of Brentwood, who had borrowed his aunt's Chevrolet Cavalier to go to the party in Freeport with his neighbor, Sammy Mena, 17, were killed instantly by the smash in the eastbound lane near Exit 42 in Bay Shore, authorities said.
The two occupants of the SUV Ford Explorer which then rolled over and burst into flames climbed out of the four-wheeler with minor injuries.
Alfaro's childhood friend Oscar Umanzor, 19, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the Cavalier next to Alfaro, was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital, treated for bruises and later released.
"It just came straight at us. It was so quick, we didn't have time to do anything," said Umanzor.
The teen said he blacked out when the SUV hit, and woke up shaking on the side of the road, where a good Samaritan put a jacket on him.
He was later told his friends were dead. "It really hurts. Luis was such a nice kid. I'm still in shock," the teen said at his Brentwood home yesterday.
The SUV driver, Victor Ravera, 21, of Central Islip, and his passenger, Taurean Epps, 22, of Islip Terrace, had been driving home from hanging out at a pal's house, said Epps.
Epps said the four-wheeler had suddenly hit black ice on the westbound lane of the State Parkway, causing it to skid, turn sideways, and then launch off the guardrail in the center median.
"All of a sudden we were in the air. It happened so quickly," said Epps.

They are SO unsafe!
Innocent occupants, probably sitting in the back seat drinking tea, are not immune to the evil SUV's wrath.
I am so grateful that I drive a lowly sedan who never sails into the air to attack others, nor does it do somersaults in the garage all night or burst into spontaneous flame. Whew.
I thought maybe you changed the title.
