What is so wrong with a National ID card. In a way we have one, that is easy to forge, to steal, to demand for almost everything, our Social Security card, after that our State driving licenses. Both have been sold, stolen and forged as I have said.
I don't mind showing my birth certifcicate yes I have one and I am 81 years of age.

A naturalized citizen would have to show his naturalization papers, they should mean as much to him or her as my birth certificate does to me.

If any one thinks that, with computers, the government can't find out what ever they like, you better think again,

If young kids, children if you like, can hack a computer, don't you think there are government employees ,both parties, that can and probably do?

If you think the IRS can't get into anything you do or have, talk to people who have had audits, and I do mean the little guy.

Remember the FBI files in the White House? If you have ever had a security check of any kind, you are in those files. My husband worked for GE in Cincinnati, around 1951 and 1952 and they did a complete check on him. AT that time they were working on Jet Engines.

If it is true we have 8 to 20 million illegals here I think it is about time we think of a National ID.

Aired 1/26/05 LOU DOBBS, CNN

PILGRIM: The president's proposal was critiqued by Representative James Sensenbrenner, who says it lacks detail. Sensenbrenner's own plan toughens standards for issuing driver's licenses to what he calls foreign visitors; aliens must prove that they are here lawfully; the license would expire when their visa does; and the bill also calls for closing a three-mile hole in the U.S.- Mexican border fence.

REP. JAMES SENSENBRENNER (R), CHAIRMAN, JUDICIARY COMMITTEE: American citizens have a right to know who is in their country, that people are who they say they are and that the name on the driver's license is the real holder's name, not some alias.

PILGRIM: Sensenbrenner pointed out that Mohammad Atta, a 9/11 terrorist, received a six-month visa to stay in the United States, yet received a Florida driver's license good for six years. The Sensenbrenner proposal already has political battle scars when it originally was part of the intelligence bill last December.

Today, attacked by Democrats on the hill, Congresswoman Jane Harman today issued a statement saying the laws call for states to provide tamper-proof driver's licenses. She said the Sensenbrenner proposal will not make Americans safer. She also criticized President Bush for not demanding full funding for 10,000 border guards called for in the intelligence reform bill.

Sensenbrenner today rallied against that attack saying the current bill is bipartisan with 115 co-sponsors.

PILGRIM: The Sensenbrenner bill also takes issue with the system where immigrants seek asylum. He says it's abused by terrorists, and he wants to allow immigration judges to determine the credibility in asylum cases so terrorists cannot get into the country on false pretexts -- Lou.

DOBBS: You know, we've reached a great point in this country, when there is a debate even over whether or not people who are not citizens of this country can receive a driver's license, let alone whether they're illegal or not, and the very idea that a president could be talking about immigration reform, but his Homeland Security secretary is saying, well, we can't really be bothered with adding another 2,000 Border Patrol agents to 2,000- or 3,000-mile the border.

PILGRIM: The good part of this is everyone is calling attention to it as much as they can, and it's very, very visible now, the gaps in the system -- Lou.

DOBBS: And our sense of absurdity is being overwhelmed, as it often is in Washington, D.C., and, hopefully, a few people's sense of alarm as well.

What is so wrong with a National ID card.

A national ID card or even state driver's licenses tied to a common database will not do anything to make America safer from terrorists. Remember how many of the terrorists got their driver's licenses in the first place? They were sold to them by corrupt state employees with Access.

"And when they manage to create fraudulent national id cards?"

There were some people on radio the other night, in Las Vegas, I believe saying there are now rings of business's that hire illegals that are passing phony 20 dollar bills, which aren't supposed to be able to counterfeit either.

ID cards are not the issue - the issue is the flood of illegals over the border. This is just more smoke screen to avoid doing what needs to be done. Check out the thread regarding Fort Huachaca in Arizona...

Soldiers spend hours tracking illegals on the fort (Fort Huachuca, AZ)

I agree, and I did check it out, and comment. The flood of illegals is a symptom of a much larger issue that would have to be addressed to stop the flood. It's the larger issue that is being avoided.

but it seems it calls for standards for the states to issue driver's license
You are correct. However, once the federal government sets the "standard" for a Drivers License, (which I may add has always been a STATE function), the state only becomes the issuing agency. The only way that the feds can insure compliance it to keep up with the licenses.

I appreciate you posting the two articles--unfortunately, they don't answer the question that I have regarding Sensenbrenner's feelings about deporting illegal immigrants, not just the terrorists--

I am pretty sure he answered a question at a presser regarding this, but for the life of me, I can't remember exactly what he said---I do know that I was both surprised at his answer and disappointed.

There may not even have been an article written about it--thanks for trying to find it---

True, but I will do my best not to assist them in their endeavor.
The only analogy I can come up with in a hurry is car keyes. If a thief wants your car he will get it; but I don't help them out by leaving it unlocked with the keyes in the ignition.
