US Vice President Dick Cheney today ruled out running for president in 2008, and said he was "out of here" when President George W Bush's second term expires.Mr Cheney, who has suffered a series of heart attacks, had said previously that he had no desire to run for president. He repeated his intentions in an interview with Fox News Sunday.
"George Bush recruited me to be his running-mate, and I've enjoyed that immensely," Mr Cheney said. "It's been a tremendous privilege.
"But my ability to serve him depends upon my ability not to have any other agenda other than his agenda. I made it clear when I took this job that I had no aspirations to run for president myself, that I wanted to be a part of his team.
"By 2009, I'll be 68 years old. And I've still got a lot of rivers I'd like to fish and time I'd like to spend with my grandkids, and so this is my last tour. I don't plan to run for anything.
"I've got my plans laid out. I'm going to serve this president for the next four years, and then I'm out of here," Mr Cheney said.
You are so right. Dick Cheney is living proof of why the really good people in the world are often forgotten by history. In 50 years, you will be hard pressed to find a single person who will remember George Bush's running mate. Yet, his ability to do a job without self agrandizing is so rare in American society today that he is among the great examples of good men left.
A good man who will be forgotten, but not by some of us.
Good points.
ditto, he would make a great president. Good man.
few of us understood, apparently!

And Vice President Cheney deserves to fish all those beautiful rivers where he lives and...to spend time with those darling little girls who marched in the Inaugural Parade with he and Lynne Cheney and their daughters. Plus, he needs to be able to have time to teach that new little grandson how to fish those same beautiful rivers. :) What a beautiful family. God bless VP Cheney. He has done his duty to our country...MORE THAN HIS DUTY and we are so grateful for him. Would LOVE to see him run but...we agree...it's time to have some time for himself and his family. What a guy!
That is a shame. Hopefully another good conservative gets the nod.
Old news and we knew this 4 years ago.
I was hoping he would change his mind. He is the only reason many folks voted for Bush. Cheney was the one who made the Republican ticket palatable at that time.
I think we knew this already. Perhaps in France they did not. :-)
Nightmare scenario for the Dems.
Like others on this site, I am hoping that Condi gets the nomination. I think we'll also see John McCain, Bill Frist, and possibly Tom Ridge seeking the nomination.
Now where have I heard that before.
Didn't Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr., also claim prior to Aug. 9, 1974, that he too would not run for President. Ford even maintained a "noncandidacy" stance for several months after assuming the presidency, as I recall. Ronald W. Reagan may have never believed Ford's protestation of candidacy.
He has always said that- wow a man of his WORD! What a concept!
There is nothing I can add to that except God Bless the Cheney family.
**He has always said that- wow a man of his WORD! What a concept!**
A true gentleman and a true statesman above that a true loyal and faithful man to his wife, family, President and his country.
