A list of 240,000 names of Polish secret agents, informers, secret service employees, and victims of persecution was leaked on the internet in the last days and became an instant hit. The search for "lista Wildsteina" (Wildstein's list) sky-rocketed to 300,000 per day in the second most popular search engine in Poland (onet.pl) outperforming "sex" (former top query) by more than 30 times. The list appeared on many web sites, p2p networks, and was made into a searchable database. There are worries the list might contain names of active security agents, still working abroad. Google news has more coverage.

I saw a show in Discovery Times last night about the Soviet penetration of the US government in Truman's era that reminds me of this list. The Venona Project broke the Soviet codes and it was mind boggling how many agents there were in Washington. I recall the comment that there were so many spies in the Treasury Department that they stopped recruiting them because they were bumping into each other.

A list of 240,000 names of Polish secret agents, informers, secret service employees, and victims of persecution Wow. The victims of persecution are okay, but the rest are in BIG trouble, if only from their friends and neighbors.

With any luck our spooks have such a list for alqæda operatives and has been quietly having them disappear. After all, the 2nd shoe hasn't dropped.

I recall the comment that there were so many spies in the Treasury Department that they stopped recruiting them because they were bumping into each other. And the Secret Service, bodyguards of the President, is part of the Treasury Dept

My sense of the show was that the spies were everywhere. How we won the cold war is purely Reagan. I don't think that the federal government was ever in it to win.
