NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- After lobbing a few warning shots over the years, News Corp. all but declared war on CNBC last week.
Wall Street analysts heard top executives of News Corp., which owns Fox News, effectively say a Fox business news cable-television channel is a go. Although News Corp. has divulged few details about the venture, it's expected to debut this summer.
News Corp. hopes that CNBC's vulnerability is underscored by its deteriorating ratings, coming at a time when Fox News is scoring resounding victories over foes CNN (TWX) and MSNBC. According to CNBC, a unit of General Electric (GE), its viewer numbers during business hours have been halved from the 2000 peak.
"CNBC is a weakened foe because it has had ratings problems since the stock market bubble burst," said David Bernknopf, a TV industry consultant with Atlanta-based Atamira. "Then again, you don't necessarily need great ratings to be successful if you're CNBC because their audience is much more affluent than other networks.'"
News Corp. (NWS) is counting on seeing Fox's very loyal core of politically conservative viewers embrace a new channel. While Fox has done a terrific job of bringing ordinary viewers to its daytime news and primetime talk shows, it hopes to woo the highly affluent people who watch business news on cable TV -- CNBC's lifeline.

Declaring war on a corpse isn't terribly impressive.
I'm gonna like that one; I'm a business news/investment advice/stock pickin' junkie! :)
And this news is definitely going to affect News Corps. stock I would assume.
Fox needs to make their news channel more watchable on the weekends and stop shutting the lights off from 11 pm to 6 am during the week with re-runs. They need a program from 11-1 and then Sky News or some sports and business programming overnights. Such a waste of time they have on their hands. They could do so much more than replaying The Factor 3 times, Hannity and Colmes 2 times, and Greta and Cavuto over again. CNN and MSNBC go live at 5 am...Fox stays sleeping til 6.
How hard is it to come on an hour earlier and beat the competiton even then?
I think Fox should launch a 'Headline News' channel like CNN's Headline News. They would win that too.

Is Headline News doing well? What is their primary audience? Any insights?
Was thinking the same thing.
Why even bother.
How many 'business' cable channels does a cable outlet need?
Next, FoxNews will be trying a headlines channel????
One is enough; two is too many.
CNBC has the perfect pair for a business "H&C" program. I hope they jump.
See that green arrow, and the 4.15 number on this photo?
I think they are underrating that woman. I give her at least a 7.5.
I like Neal. And I hope to see more of Stuart Varney if Fox goes through with this new channel.
Think what they can air in the evening hours as well..
I think they are underrating that woman. I give her at least a 7.5.
If you convert bra cup sizes to numbers to numbers, that would be just over D.
Aw c'mon. I KNOW you would pay them more than that! Hell Laz, you offered 20 dollars for the "red head" last week!
The bid appears for the 'pair' seems to be in the bottom right-hand crawl line. I think you're outta luck.
