Stark is first to put video on congressional Web site

Washington -- Fremont Rep. Pete Stark made a little bit of congressional and high- tech history Friday by becoming the first member of Congress to post a video clip on his official Web site.

His 3 1/2-minute blistering response to President Bush's State of the Union speech on Wednesday night is part of a new program devised by Democratic activists to let members of Congress communicate directly with their constituents by video. Republicans are expected to follow suit, and soon.

The effort is headed by Advocacy Inc., a small Washington-based firm that has done work for MoveOn.org, the Berkeley-based organization that became a major force mobilizing anti-Bush sentiment in the 2004 election campaign.

The firm charged Stark's office $100 to tape the segment and post it on his site

Uhhh...I'm confused.

I've been able for some time to post video on my web site without the help of a program devised by activists. Why couldn't Congressmen do the same?

And, how long before the blogosphere dismantles his rant? (I'm thinking it has to be a rant, because the SF Gate has described it as "blistering")

If you are having any problems sleeping, I suggest you view Pete's clip. It is guaranteed to "blister" you to sleep in less than three minutes.

Isn't this the A$$hole who was recorded on the answering machine of one of his constituents? Yes, as I typed this I found the recording of the voicemail.

The message was a response to the man’s criticism of the East Bay Congressman’s stand on the Iraqi prison abuse scandal.

Staff Sgt. Dan Dow, who is a member of the National Guard, said he wrote a letter to Stark criticizing the legislator’s recent vote against a resolution condemning the abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

“Your no vote on this resolution is a disgrace to the people of this district who have elected you,” Dow wrote. “I urge you to stop your contemptuous display of bitter partisanship.”

And Stark’s response? A personal voice mail.

“Dan, this is congressman Pete Stark,” the message said. “I just got your fax, and you don’t know what you’re talking about.

“I doubt if you could spell half the words in the letter, and somebody wrote it for you,” the message went on. “So I don’t pay much attention to it. But I’ll call you back later and let you tell me more about why you think you’re such a great goddamn hero.”

What a jerk this guy Stark is...

I am truly surprised that, given how much the average congressional blotivator (R or D) loves to hear and see themselves talk, this hasn't happened before.

AN OPEN LETTER TO REP STARK

Representative Stark,

Your comments in response to the President's State of The Union address on your website is just that, a response. Monday morning drivel, useless babble. Just why doesn't the Democratic party, and you included try a presponse, rather then response? I believe the answer to that question is your party is mind-numb for any real ideas. The constant shrill from the likes of Kennedy, Kerry, McAulliffe and your new little video, just speak to the "nothing new" persona of the Democrat gang.

During the years ahead, the red state advance, county by county, will further reduce the din of your ilk . In fact in 2006 Representative, you might consider retirement. I'd say 34 years is long enough, don't you? You will be 76 and a good age to relax. With the new time on your hands you can sit down with your 7 kids and explain the fight your party fought in support of Partial Birth Abortion. That's a proud heritage.

No Representative, your video is not new ground, just more of the same lack of vision. The country is in the control of the people, growing stronger every day and thank God for that.

I remain, A Proud Voter,

Carl Swensen
