CANANDAIGUA NY A substitute teacher at Canandaigua Academy was arrested earlier this week after he allegedly tried to buy marijuana from an Academy student.
Todd B. Christensen, 34, of Penn Yan, was charged Tuesday by Canandaigua City Police with unlawful possession of marijuana and endangering the welfare of a child. He was taken to Ontario County jail in lieu of $2,500 cash/$5,000 bond.
At his arraignment Wednesday, Canandaigua City Court Judge Stephen Aronson lowered the bail to $1,000 cash/$2,000 bond and issued an order of protection for the teenage informant.
He also adjourned the case for one week because Christensen did not yet have an attorney.
Christensen was released after posting the $1,000 cash bail Wednesday.
Police said Christensen who was working through Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES substitute service asked an Academy student to sell him marijuana in December.
A six-week investigation ended Tuesday, when a teenager working as a police informant set up a drug deal that was to take place on North Main Street. After it did, officers moved in and arrested Christensen, police said.
Its very unfortunate, said Superintendent Stephen Uebbing, adding that school officials worked closely with police to create this outcome.
Uebbing said Christensen did not show other signs of concern, but when it came to officials attention that he was having such conversations with students, they contacted police immediately.
Christensen has been a substitute through BOCES since January 2004 and has also worked in Newark and Marcus Whitman districts.
Uebbing said Christensens work in the district was discontinued immediately, and he will be reported to the state Education Department. Uebbing said he assumed Christensens teaching license will be revoked.
I certainly hope so. Can you imagine the grade he'd give to this student?
This guy is teaching? Sounds like he could use a few lessons himself! Buying Dope from a student at his school - Go straight to jail for stupidity not drugs.
D'oh!
Not necessarily. He was a substitute.
As we all know, Canandaigua is not too far from the City of Evil!
...most states require you be in college or have at least a Bachelors degree before you can substitute teach...makes you wonder what they are teaching in "higher" education.
Pot should be legal for adults. Tax it and regulate it. What's the big deal?
The success of the WOD continues.
More government involvement won't fix too much government involvement.
I'd like to think we can at least agree that, even if marijuana should be legal, teachers shouldn't be buying it from underage children on school grounds
You bet.
Don't tax it - even better - lol
If it were legal, they wouldn't have to.
They really should change the bail requirements in these marijuana cases to make it a little easier.
Something like $2,500 cash/$5,000 bond/8 oz. pot.
More government involvement
mlc9852's proposal sounds to me like less net government involvement; taxing and regulating is less intrusive than banning.
If you think it's intrusive now, just wait til they make it less intrusive.
It seems odd that many folks think it has to be one of those options. "just leave me alone" doesn't seem to be an option. That's how far we have slid.
