Normal Service Resumed (Let's Tell Peggy What We Think)
The Wall St. Journal ^ | 2/4/05 | Peggy Noonan

Normal Service Resumed The George Bush the nation re-elected is back.

Friday, February 4, 2005 12:01 a.m. EST

George Bush finally began his second term on Wednesday night with an address that marked the return of the Bush of the stump, the Bush who was re-elected president three months ago and whom the nation knows well. His State of the Union address underscored that he meant what he said when he ran: Efforts to move against junk lawsuits, protect marriage and reform Social Security are all on the table. America continues as a friend of liberty throughout the world. The speech was marked by an air not of insistence but of persuasion. George Bush made it clear he does not intend to cooperate with the tradition whereby second terms are all anticlimax enlivened by scandal. He will not be at the mercy of history. He means to continue doing big things. This was the plainspoken Bush of old.

Explain how the "Little Big Man" comment is a compliment, please.

I am being patient and am not attacking Noonan personally. I have referenced points in the article I disagree with. YOU, however, are personally insulting everyone on this thread, whether they have attacked Noonan personally or not.

Now, how about explaining that "Little Big Man" comment.

but Peggy's been more wrong than right about President Bush for quite a while now and here simpering prose has been unpalatable for far longer than that.

Actually, Peggy has generally been on board with the President. She even took leave of absence from her job on the WSJ to participate in his re-election team, if you'll recall.

And so far as her "simpering prose" is concerned, I've written on this forum that I'm attracted to Peggy's writing because it reminds me of my mother's.

So, smile when you say that, podner.

No,not "people",OLDER people. You know, the ones who already ARE invested in the markets, unlike the younger people, whom she claims, due to their lack of experience, will LOVE the choices.

don't bother dumpster diving at DU tonight, we've got our own foil here at FR :)

I haven't seen you answer my point. You proudly have pics of purple-fingered folks on your page...but Peggy says that freedom for everyone is too big a goal.

Please explain where you draw the line at who can aspire to be free?

Now, how about explaining that "Little Big Man" comment. You would have to ask her. I find it odd too, but I'm not going to damn her with biased presumptions abuot her intent.

Your turn: With sincerity and in good faith, find something in her article that you applaud - show me your critique is more than mere spite.

I am going back to the article to copy that entire paragraph. I can't see any way it is anything but a sly insult, but maybe I am missing comething.

Yes,I know full well that she took off to help at the Convention;however,do YOU recall what she did there? :-)

Her columns are a mixed bag and have not been well written, consistently, for a while.I take it,that on her GOOD days, she reminds you of the way your mother wrote;okay? Otherwise,I must assume that your mother wrote nasty insults covered in treacle, which I rather doubt she did.

"They take your money from your paycheck and then 40 years later when you're old they start giving some back each month."

Put this way, Social Security sounds so demeaning. "Because you people are too irresponsible and shortsighted to save for your retirement, we'll save your money for you."

But in a surprising way for the president the issue is win-win. If he loses in Congress, he lost on a great issue on which his large base will likely believe he was right, and on which history will not be able to prove him wrong. And if he wins, he allows the free market to energize and renew a huge creaky behemoth. My guess? Little Big Man is going to get reform.

Little Big Man? I just don't get it.

I DID answer you, see post 26. But since you've checked out my profile, you would SEE my answer above the pics you referenced, in a plain text quote of Lewis.

Perhaps thats why so many of you have issues with Noonan - you don't bother to comprehend what you read before attacking.

...but people can have different opinions and still be on the same team.

Well it depends on whether by team, one means cult. Questioning the cult leader is heresy.

I don't know the orignal source of LBM. Was he someone in a win-win situation? Someone under-estimated who out-performed?

...oh, for pete's sake...you liberals have no mental rigor...

Noonan wrote a tearful piece about having to tape up a "safe room" in her apartment and buy a gas mask.

Noonan wrote a tearful piece about how she would deprive us of her presence for a WHOLE NINE WEEKS so she could work on the Presidential campaign.

Noonan wrote a critique of the Inagural Address, complaining about us being protected against those who would be the REASON she would buy a gas mask...and told us that freedom for everyone was too big a goal.

...jeez...you guys don't do your homework....

OK, here is the paragraph. I am reading it again, but it still looks like a slam to me.

Plus, I think this is an odd way to look at Social Security reform. The issue is critical to the future of this nation and its economy, not simply a political issue.

You aren't about to question Peggy's motives, but you have no problem accusing me of spite. How very nice of you.

I like the description of Harry Reid.
