Pierce Dismissed From Men's Basketball Team
University of Iowa basketball player Pierre Pierce has been permanently dismissed from the team. The announcement came today from Head Coach Steve Alford.
"Effective, immediately, Pierre Pierce has been dismissed from the University of Iowa men's basketball team," said Alford.
"I regret this step has become necessary, but Pierre has betrayed the trust we placed in him when he was given a second chance two years ago. Pierre is an excellent basketball player who will be missed by our team. But, given the circumstances, I feel this is the only appropriate response."
Pierce, a 6-4, 195-pound junior guard from Westmont, Ill., was Iowa's leading scorer with a 17.8 average. He was a strong candidate for all-Big Ten honors. He started 80 of 84 games during his Iowa career.
He scored 1,072 career points and had 305 assists in his two-plus years with Iowa. He was co-Most Valuable Player for the Hawkeyes last year and was a third-team all-Big Ten choice. Pierre was named to the Gazette Challenge all-tournament team the last two years.

Rumors around here state that the woman who was assaulted in 2002 was a female athlete, I think maybe a softball or women's basketball player. Not sure if this is the same as the woman assaulted this year.
U. of Iowa has a BIG problem with rape. I would advise anyone thinking of sending a kid there to think twice.
I suggest a new uniform for UC-black and white prison stripes.

Iowa City was voted as 'best city'in the US for lesbians.
I am so proud to be an alum.............sheesh. I wouldn't watch that team if they were playing in my driveway.
Not only that but the administration is nasty and does not care about its own students. They hide the rape rate and do not prosecute, like they are doing in this case.
I spent a week in Iowa City back in the 70s (took a course at the medical center). After driving through all the soy bean fields in from the airport, I wound up in a place that reminded me of a New England college town; the writer's workshops and artsy craftsy bars and shops, etc. More liberal than I ever would have expected.

BUT having said that, it's what turned me into a raging conservative, so it's not all bad!
Takes guts to terminate a black player when , well, only 100% of the remaining players are black. Could it be that they were simply making room for a white, affirmative action player?
The only good thing I can think of is that the student bodies generally speaking are not the most liberal components of their respective "university communities." The administration (frequently political hacks), the faculty, the massive unionized maintenance staffs, and the college town "hangers-on" (you know, the alums -- not necessarily grads -- who couldn't stand to leave, and who opened a coffee house, or a consignment shop, or a health food store, or a holistic meditation center, or who hung out their law shingle rather than joining a firm in the big city) are all more liberal, in my estimation, than the students.
Every one of the schools mentioned has a very healthy "conservative underground" among the students. I wouldn't represent that the majority of students in Chapel Hill are right-wingers, but I would submit that the situation is less dire than might appear from the red/blue maps. The resistance movement is alive and well.
You're exactly right. But as is normal for Dims, they always seem to get the limelight.
The coach's call-in show should be interesting. Everybody will be ordered to ignore the puking elephant in the middle of the room.
