History 101:
--The USA (and Britain) supported the USSR during WWII. Strangely enough, we thought it more important for as many nations to defeat Nazism/Fascism than to worry about their politics. We gave billions in $ and armaments to the communists. Mostly it was the USA, because Britain had very little to give that they weren't already using. The Soviets would later use this weaponry to oppose us in the Cold War.
--The whole Vietnam thing started because of the French. They could have established a stable local government based on Western ideals that could have withstood the propaganda of the communists but just couldn't bear to give up their colonies in SE Asia. After the communist insurgency grew to the point that they could slaughter whole realms of people who disagreed with them without opposition, the "Evil" USA stepped in to tell them they shouldn't do that. We even had the gall to try and stop them.
--Ask the people in that "Other" Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, East Germany, etc) if communism was a good, democratic form of government. You might not like the answer you get. But what do they know? Just because they lived under horribly repressive murderous communist regimes doesn't make them experts on the true beauty of the communist ideals. Those people don't understand the world like the upper class socialists from the UK, France, Belgium and Germany.
--The US didn't intervene in the communist takeover of China. Mao and Chou were able to slaughter as many as 100 million of their own people without repercussions. Yup, those Americans opposing communism were the EVIL EMPIRE of the 20th Century, don't you know?
--In the Middle East, American arms were used by the Israelis, Turkey, and Iran under the Shah. Sadly, we did nothing when the Shah was overthrown by Islamic fundamentalists in the late 1970's. These fundamentalists went on to use the weapons we gave their country to slaughter more Iranians in the next five years than the Shah did in 30.
--Most of the weapons of choice for Middle East dictators and thugs were Soviet, French, and German. Why? Were these weapons better? No.... Because the USA refused to sell our weapons to murderous thugs and dictators. We DID have diplomatic relations with Saddam Hussien's Iraq BEFORE they invaded Kuwait. Donald Rumsfeld even met Saddam sometime in the 1970's. But please note, even when Saddam was fighting the Iranian Islamic fundamentalists, he didn't use US weapons. Why? We didn't sell him any. He was, after all, a murderous thug dictator. Perhaps he could have used our help in defeating the Islamic fundementalists, but our ethics stood in the way of helping him. Unlike say, Great Britain in the 19th Century playing politics in Europe.

As someone else said, the Oprah-hamburger case was a private lawsuit. And in case your email friend hasn't been updated: THE LAWSUIT WAS A HUGE FAILURE.
I was also appalled at your friend's idiotic comments on the McCarthy/Hollywood issue. As Ann Coulter has pointed out relentlessly, McCarthy had nothing to do with it. It was HUAC - the House, not the Senate. But maybe that's too complicated for left wing Brits to understand? I recommend this person read "Treason" edited by Eric Bentley which is simply HUAC testimony and gives a very rounded picture of the proceedings. I would also recommend objective biographies of Dashiell Hammett & Lillian Hellman (they are out there!)which point out the hardball tactics these two used on writers and directors who shied away from injecting left wing propaganda into Ma & Pa Kettle movies. And many of the "Hollywood Ten" (especially the odious John Howard Lawson) were no better.
