How convenient that this person left out that we saved Europe from destruction 2 times.

Europeans are jealous and have been for a very very long time.

Since you are mischaracterizing my intention....replace the word defend with the word REBUT. But I think everyone else comprehended my meaning.
Thanks everyone!

I'm currently in Germany for a training exercise.

Two nights ago I was eating at a local restaurant with a bunch of the guys. A German man leaned over to our table to thank us -- not for freeing Iraq, but for freeing Germany and keeping it free during the cold war. He even alluded to how some here in Europe - including some 'reputable' German publications - used last week's Holocaust anniversary to claim the whole thing was an exaggeration or made up altogether. He also grieved for our soldiers (many of who are currently deployed from Germany to Iraq) now laying down their lives there to free another country.

The man was in tears, so we graciously accepted his thanks on those who went before us.

scroll on way down for information about the UN...always the darling of the left but useless in an emergency like a tsunami or impending peril.

We in Europe remember how America has been involved in destabalising and usurping a democratically elected government - Chile on Sept 11 1972

You can't be seriously asserting that "we in Europe" remember any such thing. Most of "you in Europe" weren't even born then, and were more likely than ever to have been born in the middle east or Asia, and wouldn't know Chile from chili. That notwithstanding, it WAS a mistake to use the CIA to support a homegrown coup. We should have sent in oiur military directly and kicked the commies asses ourselves. Nixon was a bit too subtle for his own good sometimes, as you may have heard.

used Agent Orange in Viet Nam

Agent Orange was not a chemical weapon. It was defoliant used in an attempt to strip vegetation providing enemy cover in thick jungle terrain. It was used to make our guys safer. The deleterious effects of Agent Orange were unknown at the time, and problematic to establish later. They hurt our own troops. Does anyone with any sense really believe we were harming our own troops purposely?

demonised left wing people in the entertainment industry during McCarthyism,

We "demonized" people who, as it turns out, were actually communist traitors. Go figure.

supporting death squad governments in Central/South America, just to mention a few things,

We supported governments in Central/South America to prevent the spread of such wonderful humantiarians as Fidel Castro and Daniel Ortega. In real life, not all of your choices are between pure good and pure evil, but we made the right calls.

and, most recently, your FBI came here and managed to get the servers for several Indymedia sites taken down (thank goodness they are up and running again)

The FBI has no power to do anything internationally. Please adjust your tinfoil hat.

Oprah Winfrey was landed with a court case just for saying that she wouldn't eat a hamburger again

Oprah, as we all know, is an idiot. However, she was sued by private individuals because of stupid and inaccurate statements she spewed on her show. They lost. What's the big deal? Should we hold your government responsible for crazy behavior of individual citizens? I bet you don't want to go there.

we are regularly reading about how people in the States are being arrested just for criticising the government - a few months back it was a couple wearing T shirts claiming Love America, Hate Bush.

If you could get arrested just for criticizing the government here, half the Congress and all of the media would be rotting in jail. Unlike in England, where you CAN be jailed for what you write or broadcast, we have a little thing here we like to call "freedom of speech". Applies to everybody, pretty much all the time. It allows you to be an idiot. Heck, it even allows you to post the kind of sniveling falsehoods you did. It doesn't protect you when you're screaming during a speech, laying down on railroad tracks, or otherwise breaking non-speech laws.

Here in Britain the vast majority of the population was against the war and we are sick of our prime minister being Bush's lapdog.

Then vote him out. I like Blair personally, but I'd much rather see a more conservative government in the U.K.

We have a very different culture and we don't want your very powerful big business culture pushed on us.

Then don't eat at McDonald's, don't buy American jeans, don't listen to American music, etc. It won;t hurt our feelings one bit.

Have you read how an American seed company (Monsanto?) has produced 'addict' seed that won't grow and develop unless the company's fertilizers are used and how Iraqi farmers won't be allowed to save (patented) seed that they've been given by US seed companies who have reaped the benefit of the war?

Have YOU heard anything about the interim Iraqi intellectual property regs? Would you know a patent if it bit your ignorant ass? The interim regs in Iraq are pretty much like they are in the U.S, and yes, even in the U.K.: you don't need a patent to practice what you do. You need a patent to prevent OTHERS from practicing what you've patented. So, if they want to, the Iraqi farmers can keep on doing whatever they've been doing for years that's made Iraq such an agricultural powerhouse. Unless they have been using patented genetic strains belonging to someone else, which is extremely unlikely. Nobody is forcing anything on anyone. The 1970 Iraqi patent statutes outlawed any biopatents, e.g., patents on plants. That departs from the practice of the United States for over 200 years. If you put the time and resources into developing new and nonobvious plants, you should reap the fruits (pun intended) of your efforts. If your developments offer enough of an advantage, others will want to pay for them. If not, they'll keep on planting whatever they were planting before you came along. In Iraq now, there is an examination process to evaluate "claims" of novelty and unobviousness, same as here and in the rest of the civilized world, intended to weed out bogus patents. There is a mechanism for challenging the validity of issued patents in the court system, even more rigorous than the intitial examination procedure, since it's adversarial. Do evil corporations like Monsanto have an advantage because they have lots of money? Sure. Does Virgin Airlines money and knowledge give them an advantage over me if I wanted to compete with them? Sure. Do you have an advantage because you don't live on a farm in Iraq? Sure. Do the Iraqi farmers have an advantage because they don't live in North Korea? Sure. Welcome to reality. But to say that the patent system hands the fate of Iraqi farmers over to "evil corporate interests" is just plain silly. Beyond that, there is absolutely no credible scientific evidence of human or environmental harm accruing from "genetically altered" grains, fruits, or vegetables. Farmers have been "genetically altering" plants and animals since before recorded history, principally through selective breeding. You cannot find any cultivated (as opposed to wild) food source that has not been "genetically altered" at least in part. Again, the market produces the best solution.

On our most respected news programme, Panorama, the other night we heard how new evidence has come to light that US and British military are responsible for killing thousands of civilians in Iraq, NOT the insurgents as had previously been thought responsible.

As someone else pointed out, a "respected" report that has since been retracted.

Here in Britain and the rest of Europe we get the impression that your media is narrow and biased so you just aren't getting the facts. Perhaps that's something you should be looking at instead of spending time worrying about whether people are anti-American or not..... something that we, in a democracy have the right to be if we wish.

Our media is narrow and biased. In fact, an esteemed news anchor at a "respected news programme" was recently caught basing a story on forged documents in an attempt to influence an election. You may have heard about it. Fortunately, we have many news sources, and forums like Free Republic to sort them out.

I have family in the US so I know that not everyone is a Republican born again Christian.

I am sorry, but not surprised, that your family are atheist Democrats. I will pray for them.

Both our countries should hang their heads in shame at how we've sold weapons of every sort to countries that we later wage war on - we backed Saddam Hussein even though he was gassing the Kurds, because he was our friend against Iran.

Your country should hang its head in shame for having an education system that produced ignorant crapweasels willing to swallow every conspiracy theory it sees. Mine is just fine, thanks.

I'd put our Ecomomy and Military against yours anyday!

I defended a post by this person in a newsgroup where she posted an article that called ALL of our American soldiers stupid murderers.

By capitalizing ALL.....it sounds as if you yourself think SOME of our soldiers are murderers.

This "addict seed" you are talking about is a bunch of hogwash and the label is obviously made up to make it sound real bad. Monsanto produces seed that is called "round-up ready". This seed grows plants that are resistant to Round-Up when it is applied to kill the weeds growing around the plant.
Other companies make competing systems such as Bayer Cropscience' Liberty and Liberty-Link products.
