A good friend called me a few hours ago terribly upset. Her two sons, both United States Marines, were in Washington DC last night (Saturday) with their dates. They went to the Hawk and Dove, which is a Capitol Hill watering hole.
Now before I go any farther here, understand that I know these two Marines and these are really good kids, hardly the rowdy type -- both went through OCS and are just not the troublemaking types.
At any rate, they were NOT ALLOWED entry into the Hawk and Dove. They were told that the military WAS NOT WELCOME and that especially was true for MARINES.
Is your blood boiling yet???? Mine is. I cannot reveal who these Marines' parents are, but let me tell you, my Freeper brethren, this is a patriotic family who has done much for our nation. (Their mother spends many weekends at Walter Reed with the injured soldiers and even had a house full of them over for Thanksgiving.) I'm telling you, this is an extraordinary family that has given much in service to our country.
So here's the deal. I want this bar to know of our displeasure with their disrespectful behavior toward these two young Marines.
At the very least, I'd like to see a round for these young men on the house and a profuse apology from the owner.
Boat sailors or as most people say, sub sailors can usually wreak havoc on a port-of-call with little or no discipline expected. :-)
They are given some latitude because they serve on submarines.....i.e. tough duty.
Don't know about the rest of the Navy or military.
A large bag of rattle snakes and a lock for the front door ought to solve the problem.
So why should you care.Defending the bar is one thing, telling people you don't care if they come to a place is taking it personally.
yeah, great idea. why don't you just suggest burning it down?
Huh?
I haven't pinged anyone.
Put down the mint julep. :-)
Horrible if true, but I'd need something in the way of proof before I even contemplated action against the bar. Hearsay isn't sufficient.
Threating not to go to a place is just as personal.
Now that you mention it, I can't count the number of bars that didn't allow sailors in, or the number of bars that were off limits to sailors. We brought it on ourselves.
That's too bad. Probably true in many parts. Southern accents in general, right? I hate to confess I used to have the same bigotry until I moved to Tennessee and grew to love drawls. I swear James Carville's accent is the only reason Mary stays with him. I hate what he says but oh how he says it! Reclaim your accent. It's a good one and this country is getting too homogenized.
The way this thread starts out it makes it sound like it was liberal trash at the bar spitting in the eye of people in the military. If that is the case, I will surely pick up the phone and give them a ration. But if it is for some other reason, a mistake, an error in juddgement by the bar, then we need more detail.
FR ought not become a place to just jump to it on a call to action without verification and details. Raycpa post was not an unreasonable suggestion.
Why should you care.
"Why should you care."
I care about the truth. And if this place discriminates against marines, or ANY military, they are sure doing a bad job of it, because I see them in there ALL THE TIME.
Even though I do not agree with stuck_in_new_orelans' attitude tonight I have to agree with him that the accent down there does not sound Southern. It sounds like NY.
When I lost that accent people's attitudes toward me changed dramatically for the better.
yeah, Ol' McGuinness passes around the IRA cap every night 'round 11...
