Kerry: Iraq Election No Big Deal

A bitter-sounding Sen. John Kerry dismissed the historic Iraqi election on Sunday, warning Americans not to "overhype" the watershed event.

"No one in the United States should try to overhype this election," Kerry told NBC's "Meet the Press." The failed presidential candidate questioned the historic referendum's legitimacy, saying, "It's hard to say that something is legitimate when a whole portion of the country can't vote and doesn't vote."

Kerry also pooh-poohed reports of a surprisingly high 72 percent turnout by Iraqi voters, insisting instead that the election has "gone as expected."

Asked if he thought Iraq was now less of a terrorist threat, Kerry at first said, "No, it's more. And, in fact, I believe the world is less safe today than it was two and a half years ago."

But he changed his answer moments later, after "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert pressed him on the bizarre claim.

"I'm glad Saddam Hussein is gone, and I've said that a hundred times," he insisted.

JOHN KERRY: "I have no doubt, I've never had any doubt -- and I've said this publicly -- about our ability to be successful in Afghanistan. We are and we will be. The larger issue, John, is what happens afterwards. How do we now turn attention ultimately to Saddam Hussein? How do we deal with the larger Muslim world? What is our foreign policy going to be to drain the swamp of terrorism on a global basis? "

Hypocricy, thy name is Effin!

The very junior senator (the soberer one) from MA

Oh, I don't know about that. I suspect he's at least smoking some good stuff. More likely he's into Clinton's nose candy stash too.

Kerry is showing his true colors and they ain't Red or White, rather he's a "cheaper" form of blue.

Kerry on the same program stood by his Christmas in Cambodia story, even though his own campaign staff said he probably had the date wrong.

Beckel was just on with Brian Wilson and was stunned by Kerry's comment. Said this is no time for anyone to dismiss the significance of the elections there.

Elected officials are a reflection of the people who elect them. The people of Mass. must be out of their minds.Or are they just stupid.

So I guess your yankee election of 1868 was illegitimate given that Texas and two other states were not allowed to vote, three years after the civil war was over?

Someone needs to kick this guys ass .... oh never mind, George did it.

I hope that al-Jazeera and other Arab media outlets don't pick up this diatribe of Kerry's. What a great way it would be to demoralize the Iraqis and make the US look stupid to the Arab world.

Not that many of the 'Rats really liked Kerry...they just backed him hoping he could beat Bush. He's useless to them now and they have no intention of giving him another shot in 2008...to the extent that he gets air time he's diverting attention from Hillary and other potential 2008 candidates.

Senator Kerry, if you were the President of the United States; would you have canceled the Iraqi election given your view of the event's illegitimacy?

Also, by "overhype" do you mean the liberation of a country, with citizens once oppressed by a murderous\torturous dictator who are now acting to elect representatives 'of the people' to seek freedom, liberty and individual rights, is somehow too insignificant to be worthy of worldwide media coverage?
