I'm sorry, this woman is a teacher? I know teachers aren't blessed with any higher level of intelligence than anyone else but she's either stupid, spineless, or both. Calling into a radio show to seek legal advice? Please... If she doesn't know enough to call somebody at the post office and the superindendant with this complaint, shame on her. Of course, if the letters were addressed to the school and not to the teacher, or individual students, then the principal could wipe his butt with the letters if he wanted to. Either way, the superindendant of schools should've been the first to hear about it, not the radio host.

Re #22.....I was thinking the same thing....intercepting the delivery of mail and destroying it is a felony, isn't it?

Where was this? In New York?

This is appauling and this principal needs to be brought up on charges.
It is a federal offense to destroy mail.

The legal issue I see is if the letters were brought in to the school already opened. In that case it was letters torn up, not mail.
At any rate, it would seem alot of publicity would bring pressure on the principle to prompt a public apology at the very least. Military families have a big voice, and they are everywhere. Where in NY was this? Upstate you have Ft. Drum in Watertown.

Then, the principal intercepted the letters written by soldiers in Iraq to the school children, and tore them up, saying she "didn't approve of the use of the term `Bad guys' in the letters."

You sure you've got this right?

Sounds to me, more like the principal tore up letters that the students had written to the soldiers..
( the term "bad guys" gives it away.. terminology used by children, not knowing what the right word for the enemy is.. i.e., "make those bad guys sorry for being so mean".. )

Just my guess here, but the letters written by the class were gathered together, delivered to the school office for mailing, and intercepted and destroyed by the principal before they ever left the building..
They never made it to the post office, were never mailed, and as such, do not fall under postal regulations..

While the actions of the principal were totally reprehensible, and merit criticism, even a review by the school board, it does not rise to the level of violating postal regulation or federal law..
They were still in the possession of, and control of, the school.. i.e., the principal..

Just sayin'..
First, make sure of the facts.. and that you've got them straight.. before you go lynching someone..

I do believe destroying someone else's mail is a federal crime...

This did not just happen to unknowns like this womn and her husband. Do you remember about 30 years ago when Anita Bryant was a big star? She forsaw the advance of the Homosexual agenda and tried to rally people gainst it as objectionable. They successfully ended her career and branded her aa Christian fundamentalist hater.

Please ping me when you find out more details. This is outrageous. She should be prosecuted if this is true.

Federal charges for interference/destruction of US Mail, since it was not addressed to the principal?

Used to be serious felony a few decades ago,

DITTO THAT.

IF this is true:

  1. If this woman destroyed letters from the children (before they were commited to the U.S. Mail, she is, simply, evil.
  2. If she destroyed received letters to the children from soldiers (transmitted via the U.S. Mail), she is, simply, evil.
  3. If she intercepted letters going either direction that were committed to the U.S. Mail -- then she is in violation of Federal Law -- and should be indicted and tried.

Well, actually, "bad guys" is a common term in the military.

During his four-month tour in Iraq, Master Sgt. Jeff Smith knew the “bad guys” were watching and waiting from a distance ready to press the button to a hidden bomb once he entered the kill zone.

Here's a new military term that my brother-in-law, a Navy helo pilot recently returned from Iraq, taught me.

Squirters: "Bad guys" that "squirt" out of a building and that your gunner has to shoot after you drop off a SEAL team on the roof of said building.

Possibly.. I'm sure the PC culture has taken hold, even in the military, in the 24 years since I served..

I know it wasn't a common term when I was in..

I subbed for a 5th grade teacher for several days around Thanksgiving. We worked on a project of writing letters to a group in Iraq. The kids also colored pictures (Christmas and patriotic) to enclose in their letters.

They have a bulletin board in the hall, illustrated with letters and pictures they got in return. This is the second year the 5th graders did this, with the help of this teacher.

The kids really enjoyed doing this, and they have enjoyed the responses they received.

I am so thankful my grandchildren go to a school that supports our troops. They also had a fantastic Veterans Day Program, with local vets being recognised.

It's the current military slang equivalent for the old "Rebs", "Blue-bellies ", "Dons" (Spanish-American War), "Krauts", "Japs" or "Charlie".

It is more PC but, on the other hand, you can keep using it no matter what theater of operations you are in. :-)

I agree, this story, if true, needs a source and to be followed up on.

We can not let this go by the wayside and be swept under the rug.
