The legal issue I see is if the letters were brought in to the school already opened. In that case it was letters torn up, not mail.
At any rate, it would seem alot of publicity would bring pressure on the principle to prompt a public apology at the very least. Military families have a big voice, and they are everywhere. Where in NY was this? Upstate you have Ft. Drum in Watertown.
