Rebels eye nerve gas: CIA
By Bob Drogin
Washington
October 11, 2004
Militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and other insurgency networks across Iraq are increasingly trying to acquire and use toxic nerve gases, blister agents and germ weapons against US and coalition forces, according to a CIA report. . .
Investigators into the insurgency's attempts to acquire chemical weapons said one group, dubbed the al-Abud network, recruited scientists and sought to prepare poisons over seven months before it was dismantled in June.
The CIA says Zarqawi has long sought to use chemical and biological weapons against targets in Europe as well as Iraq.
An exhaustive report released last week by Charles Duelfer, the CIA's chief weapons investigator in Iraq, concluded that Saddam Hussein destroyed his stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in the early 1990s and never tried to rebuild them.
But a little-noticed section of the 960-page report warns that the danger of a "devastating" attack with unconventional weapons has grown since the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq.
Zarqawi has long sought to use chemical and biological weapons against targets in Europe as well as Iraq.
The Bush Administration has not previously disclosed that the insurgent groups that have emerged and steadily expanded since Saddam's ousting are now seeking to develop their own crude supplies of such deadly agents as mustard gas, ricin and the nerve gas, tabun. . . .

Interpol calls bioterrorism major threat
3/1/2005, 10:42 a.m. ET
By JOCELYN GECKER
The Associated Press
LYON, France (AP) Interpol sounded an "URGENT" warning Tuesday that bioterrorism is the world's greatest security threat and police across the globe are ill-equipped to handle an attack.
At a meeting hosted by the global police agency, police and security officials shied from detailing specific threats but warned that al-Qaida has stated its intention to use biological weapons and that Iraq has become the breeding ground for terrorist groups.
"There is no criminal threat with greater potential danger to all countries, regions and people in the world than the threat of bioterrorism," Interpol Secretary-General Ronald K. Noble said in opening remarks.
"And there is no crime area where the police generally have as little training than in preventing or responding to bioterrorist attacks," Noble added.
More than 500 police and counterterrorism officials from 155 countries flew to Lyon for the conference, making it what Noble called "the largest meeting of police ever."
Interpol is based in the southeastern city of Lyon.
"The threat of bioterrorism is real," Noble said, noting that al-Qaida has posted how-to instructions for making biological weapons on the Internet.
During the two-day meeting, police will examine past incidents, including the anthrax scare that shook the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackings and the 1995 sarin attacks in the Tokyo subway. Talks will also focus on how to better prevent and prepare for threats and training police to handle them.
Senior officials were expected from the New York Police Department, the U.S. Postal Service and London's Metropolitan Police, as well as from Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa.
South African Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi, who is also Interpol's president, singled out the possibility of an attack on the international food chain and livestock.
"The consequences of bioterrorist attack against livestock are substantial," he said, saying that "relatively little" attention has been paid to the threat.
"This is not science fiction," he said, "but a call for urgent prevention."
French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin described the level of a general terrorist threat today as "particularly high, and said that Iraq was where "most of the terrorist groups have set up offices."
De Villepin said it was crucial for countries to pool information from their biotech labs, security agencies and hospitals to better track terrorist threats and know where to turn for help.
"Each country has to know what stock of vaccines are available so they can be called on," he said.
De Villepin proposed creating an international center for monitoring bioterrorist risks and suspicious materials. The center could be linked to the United Nations and based in France, he said.
Noble noted two gaps that could hinder a fast response to a biological attack. He said police need a worldwide list of scientists and health experts who could be consulted in an emergency and a high-tech police alert system, whereby one police force could alert those around the world of a terrorist threat.
Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, international cooperation has improved. Now 117 countries contribute to Interpol's global database of names and photographs of suspected terrorists, Selebi said.
The database, which held information on 2,202 people in 2001, now has the names and pictures of more than 8,000 suspects.
Interpol also has a database for stolen travel documents. The database was started in 2002 with 3,150 entries it now has more than 5.5 million.

WTC BOMBING INMATES SENT LETTERS ALLEGEDLY TO RECRUIT TERRORISTS
Updated: 12:17 pm EST March 1, 2005
FLORENCE, Colo. -- Three men convicted in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing sent letters from the Supermax federal prison in Colorado that are suspected of being used by a Spanish terror cell to recruit suicide bombers, NewsChannel 4's Jonathan Dienst reported Monday.
Letters from one of those men, Mohammed Salameh were found on Mohamed Achraf, one of 17 people charged in October in Spain for an alleged plot to blow up that country's National Court, the network reported, citing confidential documents from a Spanish court.
One of the letters to Achraf, the alleged leader of the plot, reads: "Oh God! Make us live with happiness, make us die as martyrs, may we be united on the day of Judgment."
One of those arrested also faces charges for allegedly using letters from the trade center bombers to recruit terrorists, the network reported.
A letter sent by Salameh from prison was published in the Al-Quds newspaper, which read in part, "Osama Bin Laden is my hero of this generation."
According to NBC, at least 14 letters went back and forth between the World Trade Center bombers and the Spanish terror cell.
Inmates at the Colorado "Supermax" and other top security federal penitentiaries have strict restrictions, including having their mail inspected.
It was unclear how Salameh was able to send the letters. Wendy Montgomery, a spokeswoman at the prison here, did not return a phone call left after hours.
Justice Department officials in Washington referred calls to the Bureau of Prisons.
Supermax, dubbed the "Alcatraz of the Rockies," opened in Florence in 1994 as a place to put problem prisoners. Unabomber Ted Kaczynski and Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 bombing, were sent here, as was Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols.

Iraqis demonstrate in condemnation of Monday's suicide bombing, in Hillah in Iraq on Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Hundreds of people visited the wounded and inspected corpses at the hospital in Hillah on Tuesday, trying to identify friends and family who died in a suicide bombing that killed at least 120 people, the single deadliest attack of its kind since the fall of Saddam Hussein.
2,000 Demonstrate at Iraqi Bombing Site (Iraq 3/1/05)
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - More than 2,000 people demonstrated Tuesday at the site of a car bombing south of Baghdad that killed 125 people, chanting "No to terrorism!"...
At least 141 others were injured in the blast - the boldest challenge yet to Iraq's efforts to build a security force that can take over from the Americans.
More than 2,000 people held the impromptu demonstration on front of the clinic, chanting "No to terrorism!" and "No to Baathism and Wahhabism!"
Wahhabism is a reference to adherents of the strict form of Sunni Islam preached by Osama bin Laden, while the Baath party was the political organization that ran Iraq under Saddam Hussein.
The Iraqi people are showing their distain for the terrorist insurgents in their country. I find this to be a very incouraging sign that the tide agaist these insurgents may be turning. Hopefully the people will keep up this momentum and help get these insurgents out of their country.
Thank you. Starting in 3 days.
Thanks

Top Zarqawi Henchman Identified in New Statement from Al-Qaida in Iraq
Al-Qaida's Jihad Committee in Mesopotamia--led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi--has issued a new statement signed by "Abu Abdelrahman al-Iraqi", identified as Zarqawi's "Deputy Commander" in Iraq. In his communique, Abu Abdelrahman declares, "May Allah bless you, O soldiers of Allah and lions of al-Tawheed wherever you are and in whatever country you are fighting the enemies of Allah
O nation of Islam, prepare yourself for good tidings... We ask every mujahid to stay firm in his jihad and his religion and never to accept peace or a truce because weakness has spread throughout the nations of the infidels and good tidings of victory are visible on the horizon... O Allah, defeat America and its allies and make them and their possessions into a reward for the Muslims. O Allah, demolish America and shake its foundations
O Allah of heaven, earth, and the seas, destroy America and make its power into a reward for the Muslims. Cast whatever power they had into the sea and let it drown."
