SALEM, Ore. - Two controversial road signs that were put up in Marion County have already been ripped down.
The road signs read, "The American Nazi Party has adopted a two mile stretch of Sunnyview Road" and were put up by Marion County officials one week ago.
The county says they have received a lot of complaints from residents claiming the county is condoning the organization.
However, officials insist the American Nazi Party has a right to free speech, just like everybody else.
Viewer Note:
A sharp eyed KATU viewer noticed that the name of the group was spelled Amerian Nazi Party on the county application Thursday evening.
KATU has since asked Marion County officials whether the signs need to be changed to reflect the spelling on the application. To which they responded, "interesting question, we'll check into that."
Ah, thanks for relieving me of my tiny annoyance at this. Steal away!
You don't have to be Jewish to be given chills to see the pictures of those signs....as if it somehow legitimizes them - which is most likely the purpose.
Painting blue mud in your bellybutton has always been a survival skill. Nobody here is going to change that.
"We will kill you all! Hey, wait a minute, you can't steal our signs!"
Does anyone here know what the "NSM" means?
No Sane Members?
I like your thinking in general, but we don't want any of those twits on FR. The last thing we need is some lib using "Free Republic member" quotes in his column or news reports that say stuff like "Put all the gays in camps."
Ah...got it. It's the "National Socialist Movement," of course.
Hitler killed more than just the Jews. It was just the Jews that got murdered in masses.
Aren't the Nazis considered a terrorist group?
What gov official took money from this terrorist group?
LOL
"Nazi adopt a highway"
Let them adopt a kitten.
I'll be the contrary voice. Reluctantly, because I think these people are scum of the earth.
I'm not in favor of Nazi signs, but I am in favor of equal protection. No matter how ignorant and insane a person would have to be join it, the Nazi Party is a legal organization.
If they allow the Republican Party or the Democratic Party or the Green Party to adopt a highway, the government is not in a position to deny the Nazi's.
Chicago is a heavily Democratic area. Should they be able to ban a pro-life group from adopting a highway if they allow Planned Parenthood to do so?
It's not about who you like or who you don't like. It's about the government treating groups equally.
I know the Nazi Party hits a lot of hot buttons, so I don't expect my viewpoint will be particularly popular. But I also don't think it's necessarily a "nut" position.
However, officials insist the American Nazi Party has a right to free speech, just like everybody else.
Don't you just love when the government must allow some immoral behavior, just because they can't make judgments to exclude the inappropriate. For a more egregious example see here: 'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits'
Wonder if they will be listed on Ebay?
These "American Nazis" were not the death camp runners anyway. Not responsible for on-going infanticide, they're actually less morally repulsive than Planned Parenthood.
I am not familiar with them outside of the humorous "Illinois Nazi Party" scenes in the comedy classic "The Blues Brothers."
This is political free speech. You might *hate* it but it is what it is.
While the authorities should agnostically seek the sign stealers with the same level of vigor as they would any other public signage thief, they'll just shuffle this aside as happens when a hooker is murdered vs. a socialite's daughter.
It's probably hanging in some high schooler's bedroom or dorm room.
The story you linked to happened in Germany, not Oregon. I don't see how that's relevant to an issue rooted in the US Constitution.
Shouldn't this be classified as a "hate crime"?
" I am not familiar with them"
American Nazi Party
The American Nazi Party was founded by George Lincoln Rockwell in February 1959, at Rockwell's residence in Arlington, V A. This meeting was attended by six people and was originally called The World Union Free Enterprise National Socialists, and later The American Nazi Party, and The George Lincoln Rockwell Party. Rockwell's ultimate objective was the Presidency of the United States. He predicted the governorship of V A by 1966 and the Presidency by 1972. Once he attained the Presidency, he planned to exterminate all "treasonous Jews" through methods used by Hitler's Nazis, banish all African Americans to Africa and mend the United States Constitution to conform to Nazi whims. On August 25,1967, George Lincoln Rockwell was murdered in front of 6021 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA, the bullet entering his heart. He was murdered by an ex-assistant in the American Nazi Party who was sentenced to a 20 year prison term for the slaying.

It could be a hoax:
Marion County put up the signs after a person named C. Marchand applied for a permit under which the "American Nazi Party" agreed to help clean up the road.
The Web site for the American Nazi Party lists as its chairman Rocky J. Suhayda.
Responding to an e-mail, Suhayda said his group has nothing to do with the two signs in Salem, writing, in part ... "we would never pick up garbage along a highway in this toilet bowl of a country. ..."
