Here's a relevant article that was posted as another thread that didn't get much play. Seems like this is a good place for it too.

Expatriate Vote has Effect in Iraq

While the big day here is Jan. 30, Iraqi elections overseas have already begun. The coverage of these overseas elections is having an effect on the homeland.

Officials said the extensive Arab media coverage of the expatriate voting process is encouraging Iraqis to vote here. "They see the real happiness that Iraqis in the other countries exhibit at being able to vote," said an Iraqi official. "It is contagious."

No official will forecast what the voter turnout might be. "In some areas of the country it will be very high," the official said. "In others, it depends on what the security situation is as the people decide to go out."

I cried over that as well. I heard it on NPR (pre-FR days). I had to pull the car over to the side of the road. And no, I do not generally cry alot, honest.

I was asked by a very smart man one time "what was the defining hour in our century", I answered, "the fall of the Berlin Wall", at the time, I felt that it was a small answer, now, I know that it wasn't. This is the most wonderful thing to happen in years, I'm so excited.

May the Lord protect our troops and the Iraqi voters. May this wonderful day be seen in the Mideast and around the globe for what it truly is, a day of triumph for freedom and democracy. God Bless our president.

Prayers for the Iraqis and our troops. I have seen pictures throughout the day of Iraqi expats voting - and bursting into tears immediately afterwards, or doing little dances, or being applauded and applauding. A truly incredible event - thanks for putting up the thread.

We couldn't have imagined sitting here waiting for the Iraqis to vote...when this all started in March of 2003.

I will always remember Achmed on the roof repairing This Old Shed as Baghdad was bombed.

LOL! I actually saw one of the expatriate women, in appropriate headcovering, ululating after casting her vote in either Michigan or Maryland.
