Sunday's Election Marks Iraq's First Exercise In Democracy

By Michelle Krish

Boise -
Asaad Zangana spends the day watching news coverage and logging onto the Internet. He gets as much information as he can on the historic election in his home country, Iraq. "We can select the group we want. We can vote for the president. This is a very beautiful thing," said Iraqi Citizen Asaad Zangana.

But it's also dangerous. Insurgents have been bombing polling places and trying to disrupt the election.

Zangana wanted to make sure his family was safe in Iraq. He had not been able to get ahold of them for three days. But while Local 2 News was there, Zangana finally heard his sister's voice on the other end of the phone. "They said we are okay don't worry. They have a lot of soldiers in the street and they hope nothing is going to happen," said Zangana.

Because they plan on casting their vote in Sunday's election. Zangana says he's especially grateful women like his sister will have their voices heard. "A man and woman are equal, but what's happened is the culture is making them separate. I think they have a right," said Zangana.

He couldn't exercise his right because it meant going to Los Angeles to vote. "I hope in the future we can vote in Boise," said Zangana.

But he says he's confident those kinks will be worked out, and adds tomorrow will be like a holiday for all Iraqis. "They say we're going to celebrate every year about this day," said Zangana.

And they have reason to celebrate, because Sunday could be the start of a new way of life for them.

Iraqis will be voting for the 275-member Transitional National Assembly. The votes aren't expected to be counted until 36 hours after the polls have closed. Final results are expected to be announced February 9th.

The nobility of ordinary Iraqis is showing in the joyous faces of those outside the country as they vote. In a few hours we will see the same in the faces of Iraqis in their own nation.

This is an historic day for all Iraqis, and for all the peoples of the world who still are under the jackboots of various tyrannies. Our President spoke the correct words about these momentous events in his Second Inaugural Address. Click the first link below for a reprise of the power of Bush's words, and a hidden reason why they are so powerful.

Unbelievable. Truly

Was it, is it worth it?

I would say so.

God place your loving hands on this (the Iraq election), and also on the members of the coalition forces. Protect them all from the evil that lurks and the demons that are plotting, planning, and roaming in order to destroy the freedom that these people so desire. There is no sword mightier than your sword oh Lord. Grant the Iraqi people freedom, peace and prosperity in the name of your son Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

I may stay tuned in just long enough to see if he's in his weekend "leisure metro-gay" duds...

Listen carefully to Wes Clark to hear tonight and tomorrows talking points...it will tell you how the DEMS think the voting will go.

I have a hunch they will try to move the goalposts yet again.

Why don't we see the human shields at the polls in Iraq? They were willing to protect Iraq from bombs before the war started. Why aren't they protecting them now?

Great point!

Of what possible interest is Wesley Clark? He has had nothing to do with this except carping!

Why not interview Sanchez, or Franks, or some GI on the ground?

Grrrr.
