WASHINGTON -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, along with Border Patrol agents, are on the ground in Iraq to help secure that country's war-torn borders prior to tomorrow's national elections, CBP officials said yesterday.

CBP spokeswoman Kristi M. Clemens said the deployment team will bolster current border security efforts, providing support and additional training for Iraqi border police -- which will continue beyond the elections -- in an effort to keep saboteurs, terrorists and armaments from crossing into or out of the country.

I wonder if the BP agents will be allowed to have real bullets or pepper balls.

"Border security is critical to defeating terrorists -- whether at U.S. borders or the borders of Iraq," Mr. Bonner said.

If it's critical in defeating terrorists, then why aren't they protecting OUR borders? Oh, I forgot. We don't have the money to hire more agents because we gave billions of dollars to tsunami victims, millions to the UN for aids control in Africa, millions to the UN for dues, millions to the Palestinians, Egypt, Pakistan..... and the list goes on and on. Giving ALL of our tax dollars to everyone but the US, is much more important than protecting Americans with. After all, we are a compassionate people..... < / sarcasm >

I agree with you that the problem has to be addressed first from the "demand side" -- enforcement against employers. Following that, some form of manageable guest worker program, and then reigning in the freebies from the government should address the "supply side" quite effectively. Of course, the border crossing avenues must still be secured, particularly to prevent the Islamists from infiltrating.

Real swift, what f'n idiot decided our border guards should be in iraq versus protecting our borders?

Actually, I think it's a good idea. Our boys are getting killed partially because of poor border security in Iraq. Send over a few INS trainers to teach them how to do a better job.

But the absurdity comes from the fact the we see border security as a critical element of anti-terrorism in Iraq - but we leave our borders wide open here. Sadly, it will probably take a terror attack from goons who snuck in over our porous borders for the Bush Admin to get serious about this.

If and when this does happen, my guess is Impeachment papers will be drawn up shortly there-after.

I doubt that. Predictions are one of my favorite pastimes, but I don't think I could predict the aftereffects of such an attack - it would probably be nothing we could envision.

Whatever funtionery in the Bush Adminstration who approved this Border Patrol effort in Iraq has a political tin ear. Those who signed off on this lame idea should be assigned to sit in a hot shack across the border from Juarez and read documents in Spanish for the rest of their careers.

I think this commentary should go directly to the one responsible, President Bush!!!
