Mona Charen: Hillary cannot reinvent her past
BY MONE CHAREN
Published Saturday, January 29, 2005

A little immigration reform here, a little religion in the public square there, a little gentle talk about common ground on abortion - and what have you got? A new, moderate Hillary Clinton, announces the press.

"Democratic Party appears to be getting softer on reproductive rights," headlined a National Public Radio story.

"Gasps as Hillary woos the anti-abortion vote," reported the London Daily Telegraph.

"Hillary Clinton Seen as Staking Out Centrist Positions," announced the Bulletin's Frontrunner.

It's a testament to the rigidity and extremism of the pro- choice movement that even such platitudinous phrases as Clinton tossed into her address to the New York State Family Planning Providers conference were considered signs of movement to the center.

Clinton, in what some hopeful Democrats are describing as her "Sister Souljah" moment (a reference to Bill Clinton's rebuke to a hip-hop star in 1992), told a pro-choice audience that "opposing sides" on the abortion question should "seek common ground" in the effort to prevent unwanted pregnancies. (Oh, gosh, she's gone soft!)

She also said: "We can all recognize that abortion in many ways represents a sad, even tragic choice to many, many women."

If anodyne words like those are evidence of a move to the right, consider what that says about the pro-choice position. The pro-choice movement does not want to seek common ground in preventing unplanned pregnancies? It does not recognize that abortion is sad or tragic?

In point of fact, the pro-choice position has hardened over the years to the point where any deviation from orthodoxy is considered heresy.

They've stoutly opposed waiting periods, parental notification laws and bans on late-term abortions and "partial-birth" abortions. They've even opposed a law that would permit a baby who by accident survives a late-term abortion to be welcomed into life.

Elsewhere in her address, though, after lip service to abstinence programs, Clinton launched into a full-throated cry for (naturally) more federal spending on "comprehensive family-planning services."

Still, it would be foolish to laugh off the New Hillary. Political makeovers have succeeded in the past (the New Nixon, the New Wallace), and the Clintons have shown a knack, rare among Democrats, for grabbing symbolic bits of conservatism and weaving them into sheep's clothing.

Bill Clinton latched onto curfews and school uniforms to signal a comfortable centrism, supplemented this window dressing with a couple of substantive concessions - one on welfare reform, the other on a balanced budget - and thereby ran away with the prize.

Can Hillary do the same? It's not impossible. She can sniff the wind with the best of them. But she has two major hurdles.

The first is the Democratic Party, or at least that part of the party that nominates presidential candidates, which is moving steadily to the left even as the country moves the other way.

The second hurdle is her life. She has made a career as a liberal do-gooder, trying singlehandedly to refashion one-seventh of the U.S. economy with Hillarycare.

Her proudest moments as a lawyer were those she spent on behalf of the Children's Defense Fund, a super-liberal lobbying group that promoted welfare dependency as a right and fiercely resisted reform.

It was she who coined the phrase "vast right-wing conspiracy" to describe those who noticed her husband's lies.

Clinton may be moving to the center, but her past will cast a long shadow.

And her hips will make sure that shadow is good and wide as well.

Yes, Hitlery will try to move to the center from her kook Left position. But as Mona writes, this will be hard to due because of the woman's radical past. Plus, if the GOP leadership in the Senate has any political savy, it'll make sure there are plenty of secheduled votes to make Hitlery chose between her new centrist image and that of her leftwing heart.

And yes, Slick Willy did indeed managed a political makeover of sorts after the Dems got a good beating in '92. But remember, talk radio was just starting to get its feet on the ground then, and the bloggers and Fox were still in the future.

Hitlery will try for the center, but it will be denied to her. This witch is destined to crash-and-burn. She's not nearly as smart as she likes to believe.

Mona Charen: Hillary Clinton cannot reinvent her past

Sure she can. Or at least try.
My question to her will always be how can 800 FBI files containing sensitive confidential information get lost in her bedroom for over a year?
Is blackmail still legal for stealth communists?

Thanks to the Clintons, the Repubublicans now are in the majority of the Senate, Congress and the WhiteHouse. Thanks to the Cllintons, the American people now see the double standards of the media and see them for what they truly are. Thanks to the Clintons, they have made the democrat party a laughingstock. Thanks to the Clintons, they have shown the democrat party has no morals, selfishness, and their willingness to sacrifice all of the American people just for power.

I don't think her goal is the center. IMO she is hoping for a third party that can get her the White House with a plurality, just like her hubby did.

Just as I delight in the fact that atheists must write "2005" on every check they sign (it is after all 2005 years since our SAVIOR's birth), it warms my heart to know that Hillary must speak words that disgust her and which give comfort to the pro-life movement.

We are having an effect on the culture and the conversation. It must bring great sadness to the pro-death crowd. Amen.

Like what we saw in memogate, the internet and the blogosphere cannot be dominated by the MSM and its Liberal masters. In the blogging age, anyone can be a reporter of local, state, national and international consequence.

Hmmm, she can't reinvent her past, and she has no
viable political future outside of socialist enclaves.

Poor dear...

You're a genious, dirtboy! You've predicted the scenario that will elect Hillary! That's exactly the situation that has to happen in order for her to win. If the GOP nominates McCain or Gulliani (for instance), the coservative GOP'ers will split with the party to back a true conservative for a third party candidate.

Damn, I wish you could get on the mountain top and spread the message to forewarn everyone! This is surely the only way Hillary can be elected & it is a very real possibility.
