Silicon Valley men are fatter than women, survey finds

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Silicon Valley men are likely to be fatter and less conscious of what they eat than their female counterparts, according to a survey to be released Friday.

At least three out of five men in Santa Clara County are considered overweight or obese, compared with two out of five women, according to a telephone survey of 2,645 residents. Obesity rates were even greater for Hispanic and African-American men.

Despite the extra pounds that men are packing, researchers found that they're much less likely to diet - or even to try to maintain their current weight - than women. Roughly one-third of men surveyed were trying to lose weight, compared with nearly half of women surveyed.

Researchers also found that men were less likely to prepare meals at home, eat fruit and vegetables, or focus on what they're consuming. According to the survey, only 18 percent of men in Santa Clara County eat two pieces of fruit a day.

The survey comes as medical experts and nutritionists increasingly target boys and men in their efforts to reduce America's collective waistline through diet and exercise.

"I think some men are just as happy to have macaroni and cheese and a bowl of cereal for dinner than to take the time to prepare and put out a more rounded meal with fruits and vegetables," Bonnie Broderick of the Santa Clara County Public Health Department told the San Jose Mercury News. "We all have to work on this, so move it, men."

This does describe my husband:

"I think some men are just as happy to have macaroni and cheese and a bowl of cereal for dinner than to take the time to prepare and put out a more rounded meal with fruits and vegetables,"

However, he isn't overweight.

I guess I'd ask what standards they are using.

For example, I was surprised to learn that, at 5'10" I was considered 'overweight' at 166 pounds, according to the chart at the doctor's office.

According to the chart, a female of the same height wasn't considered overweight until they hit 175 or 180, if I recall correctly.

Anyway, there are far too many people here who could care less what they look like.

As a systems geek, I resemble this remark.

Long hours stressfully staring at terminals and typing will do it. That's the Silicon Valley lifestyle in a nutshell.

Losing weight is a big battle for me, as I only seem to get invited to "We expect you kill yourself for the project" projects. And I swear, when stress levels go up, weight gain goes up, even if I keep the same exercise pattern.

yup......increased cortisol will always start putting fat around the middle especially for men very quickly. I've worked out in the gym for years and held about 10% bodyfat even at my age of 47 most think i'm 37.....but it is hard work and I think alot of computer people I know are so preoccupied just like America's youth these days, that exercise is not part of their daily regime......

How is that not a balanced meal?

Where I work, which is a reasonable representative cross section, most of the men are tech geeks whereas most of the women are in marketing and the like. Which functions are more likely to promote good looking people?

It is notable that at the checkout lines at Fry's the junk food on the quick grab racks is in tremendous abundance! LOL!

Just wait till the chicks get married. They'll start packing on the pounds 5 seconds after the "I Do".

So true. I'd forgotten. Since I moved from CA to MN, I don't have Fry's to kick around in any more.

Cheetos -- the programmer's lunch!

Thanks for the ping. As usual, I am out of the "norm". {g} 6'1" and 180. But even though I don't like the tone and motive of the article, I have to agree with it.
