OSWIECIM, Poland -- Vice President Dick Cheney's utilitarian hooded parka and boots stood out amid the solemn formality of a ceremony commemorating the liberation of Nazi death camps, raising eyebrows among the fashion-conscious.
Cheney replaced the zipped-to-the-neck green parka he sported in Thursday's blowing snow and freezing wind with a more traditional black coat - red tie and gray scarf showing underneath - for his tour of Auschwitz on Friday.
Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan described Cheney's look at the deeply moving 60th anniversary service as "the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower."
"Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood," Givhan wrote in Friday's Post, also mocking Cheney's knit ski cap embroidered with the words "Staff 2001" and his brown, lace-up hiking boots. "The vice president looked like an awkward child amid the well-dressed adults," she said.
The very idea is obscene.
oh come on now.....lighten up.....we should be strong enough to be able to laugh at each other once in awhile. I don't think it is a big deal anyway, but he did stand out. and I guess you would have to say "the proper attire for a memorial"...which is usually a dark color at least.....
Perhaps next time Cheney could wear a full-length black mink coat and matching hat. I have one of those hats, and won't wear it unless it's below 20 degrees outside. It's way too hot otherwise!
With Cheney's heart problems, doesn't he HAVE to wear heavy-duty cold weather gear? Can anyone here with a history of heart issues let me know if that's right?
Look post #7, Cheney in Auschwitz :)
It's all about appearances and posturing to libs. never mind the event.. my god! it must be very tuff to be a democrat with common sense these days and watch your party implode on its arrogance and stupidity
Actually, Auschwitz was liberated by the Russians. But as for his attire, if that is all the media can whine about, they're definitely scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Exactly!
again....lighten up.....don't take this so seriously. If we can't laugh at each other from time to time than some have a serious bug up the whazoo.....all I said is that he stuck out......everyone is black and he in green is sticking out.....don't get so defensive......its' friday
Good for you!
Gee, did anyone even consider that he wore the parka on advice from his doctor?
Robin, go suck a prune. He was there, wasn't he? And he wasn't cracking jokes before he discovered he was on camera like some folks who suddenly turned to tears.
Looks like they could have used a snowblower.:-)
It's not like he came dressed in jeans and tee. Cold and snowy: use common sense. Wear a good jacket, and keep your head covered. Sheesh!
Fer crissake. I've BEEN in Poland in January; it is bitter, bitter cold and can be deadly.
I'll bet Cheney will be the only one in that crowd not to come down with a cold. He's also an older gentleman who's had heart attacks. And maybe Lynn (to his left) dressed him? She's probably very aware of his health and does what she can. (My DH WOULD show up in a windbreaker, LOL!)
Besides, it just shows once again that no matter what "crowd" he happens to be in, he's the smartest man in said crowd. ;)
The MSM scraping the bottom of the barrell.
he wore different stuff at inaguration, probably just as cold
It is pretty funny.
"Children, the elderly and those with heart disease are at special risk. As people age, their ability to maintain a normal internal body temperature often decreases. Because elderly people seem to be relatively insensitive to moderately cold conditions, they can suffer hypothermia without knowing they're in danger.
"People with coronary heart disease often suffer chest pain or discomfort called angina pectoris (AN'jih-nah or an-JI'nah PEK'tor-is) when they're in cold weather. Some studies suggest that harsh winter weather may increase a person's risk of heart attack due to overexertion."
