OSWIECIM, Poland -- Vice President Dick Cheney's utilitarian hooded parka and boots stood out amid the solemn formality of a ceremony commemorating the liberation of Nazi death camps, raising eyebrows among the fashion-conscious.
Cheney replaced the zipped-to-the-neck green parka he sported in Thursday's blowing snow and freezing wind with a more traditional black coat - red tie and gray scarf showing underneath - for his tour of Auschwitz on Friday.
Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan described Cheney's look at the deeply moving 60th anniversary service as "the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower."
"Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood," Givhan wrote in Friday's Post, also mocking Cheney's knit ski cap embroidered with the words "Staff 2001" and his brown, lace-up hiking boots. "The vice president looked like an awkward child amid the well-dressed adults," she said.
Does anyone actually believe the Vice President gives a rats ass about what they think?
He's warm, thats all that matters.
The Russians liberated Auschwitz not the US.
Well, in Italy, it seems all the young women dress like Donatella Versace; showing lots of flesh and, well, sort of trashy. My dress was extremely tailored - conservative, you might say.
Just as an aside, a British friend of mine visited several years ago during August in New York. I was amazed (and amused!) when he showed up wearing a linen suit and a hat straight out of the Boer War!
Viva la differance, I say.
Soviet occupation of Poland is not liberation in any sense of the accepted meaning of the L word.
for pete sake, the man has heart disease. He was smart to dress for the weather.
Hey, I have no beef with it. I think Cheney's just fine with this.
LOL Lynn must have dressed him.
According to the UK Guardian, it was 14 degrees F at the ceremony, and it was an over 3 hour affair, stretching into the evening.
just think if he had worn fur!!!
Just admit that you were wrong when you said American soldiers liberated Auschwitz and we can all move on with our lives.
Cheney and his wife lived in Wisconsin for awhile. He knows warm beats fashion any day.
It's freaking freezing Mr. Bigglesworth, so do I want to look somber or do I want to stay warm? Hmmmm...I think I will stay warm.
Even more reason to wear what he did
True, all too true!
I do like to be consistent if I can. I caught hell on here for "shaking my finger" at the Bush twins for being low-class bimbos sometime last year.
FYI.. I'm pretty sure that the WP reporter who wrote this crap is the same idiot who did the hit piece on Katherine Harris in 2000, dubbing her Cruella de Ville and talking about putiing on makeup with a trowel..
Cheers, CC :)
and that 14 degrees Farenheit didn't include the "wind chill factor" ... I'm betting it was zero.
"Well, I don't see anything wrong with that jacket... Looks real warm."
How comforting to know that the Fashin Police have replaced the SS at Auschwitz.
No doubt it zero or below with wind chill factor the fact he was even there is a great tribute to him a real tough cookie.
Also let us not forget he was at the camp this morning for 90 minutes walking around in the freezing weather again. This time because he was not sitting still with snow coming down dressed in a long black coat like the others were wearing yesterday.
God Bless Dick Cheney
