Cheney Mocked By Media Over Auschwitz Attire
Associated Press ^ | January 28, 2005 | seattlepi.newsource.com

OSWIECIM, Poland -- Vice President Dick Cheney's utilitarian hooded parka and boots stood out amid the solemn formality of a ceremony commemorating the liberation of Nazi death camps, raising eyebrows among the fashion-conscious.

Cheney replaced the zipped-to-the-neck green parka he sported in Thursday's blowing snow and freezing wind with a more traditional black coat - red tie and gray scarf showing underneath - for his tour of Auschwitz on Friday.

Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan described Cheney's look at the deeply moving 60th anniversary service as "the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower."

"Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood," Givhan wrote in Friday's Post, also mocking Cheney's knit ski cap embroidered with the words "Staff 2001" and his brown, lace-up hiking boots. "The vice president looked like an awkward child amid the well-dressed adults," she said.

Somebody should have told him - The rest of the guys where somehow informed it's going to be a bit like a funeral and somehow about more serious issues.

Maybe Chirac told him there was a skidoo race on later ?

What is surprising is that the leftists are excoriating Cheney for his lack of fashion sense, when they should be expressing their utter outrage at all the fur present at the function.

If that war material wasn't given to the damn soviets by the commie sympathizer in the White House, who are just as evil as the Nazis, the two would have fought to a standstill and eastern Europe would have been spared Soviet occupation for forty years.

Or the Nazis would have won.

I suppose that would have been a better result for the people in Eastern Europe, in your opinion?

Um, in defense of Norcal you all need to read ALL his posts, I really didn't get this impression from his comments. I never realized posting this article would lead to such banter! ALAS... its Friday, let's all just get along, I think we're all on the same side here lol!

That isn't correct at all, fdr gave the soviet Russians billions in war material that was used to facilitate communist's eastern front victory. If that war material wasn't given to the damn soviets by the commie sympathizer in the White House, who are just as evil as the Nazis, the two would have fought to a standstill and eastern Europe would have been spared Soviet occupation for forty years.

sadly you are at odds with most military historians. As much as most didnt' trust the Ruskies they were our allies and if Hitler wasn't fighting 'em in the East he would have maybe won the western front. I'm more learned on the Pacific theater but many will tell you that we at times almost lost the war and if we didn't give stuff to Stalin, The Nazis would have won in the east and shifted armies to the west.......you sound like you are talking more out of hatred for the Russian. (the cold war is over) than you are from military science.....

Without our material support in '42, the Nazis might well have taken Moscow and defeated the Soviets.

With a defeated Russia and no Eastern Front to worry about, the Nazis could have invaded England and spent resources on their nuclear weapons program.

The USA might have found itself very alone in the world....

Don't worry about it, NorCalfriend! Today we seem to have a bunch of humorless puritans on board. Freepers are usually so much more freewheeling than this that I was surprised by all the negative remarks directed at you.

Actually, all this photo shows is how different Americans dress from Europeans. When I visited relatives in Sicily one time we all dressed up for an evening out. When I entered the kitchen in my typical black New York dress, the family clapped and laughed with great good humor: "La Americana!"

Oh, excuse me for mistaking your love for the VP as hate, the line between those two emotions is so very, very thin.

So what if Cheney dressed a little different than those EURO jackasses ? If he had shown up in pink leotards and a lavender sheep skin poncho and a pair of Elton John's spectacles and a blond, shoulder length wig-the media would dared be nothing but complementry.

Paranoid? Who, me? . Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't change the fact that someone may be out to get me and destroy
everything I stand for! I may be crazy, but I sure as hell ain't insane!

see,......there ya go......if I wasn't a crazy chandaler swinger sometime I think I would go nuts...if Cheney were dressed like that I would still laugh and say he stood out.....LOL....though maybe with more of a look of concern for his wife.......hehe

Maybe its American and British humour as I got your stance more provocative rather than criticism.

I love the VP too and I do not mind what he wore and I am certain under that coat for other ceremonies inside was a smart suit and tie but immediately I saw it on Sky yesterday I knew we would be in for this fest by the left.

So what if Cheney dressed a little different than those EURO jackasses ?

How do you know the people sitting next to him are jackasses?

If he had shown up in pink leotards and a lavender sheep skin poncho and a pair of Elton John's spectacles and a blond, shoulder length wig-the media would dared be nothing but complementry.

Would you still be defending his attire if he had showed up like that? Why or why not?

I am a little confused about European and American dress can you enlighten me please.

Being British I do not see much difference between how we dress and you do. The black dress for an evening out sounds perfect to me.
