ACTRESS SLAIN

Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge — "What are you going to do, shoot us?" — by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers — two men and two women — at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

NYC had already arranged it so that only the outlaws have guns.

Yep, they have NO FEAR that their victims can defend themselves.

No, it isn't wrong. Relatively few people in NYC carry guns, including the population of criminals who carry.

A pistol six inches away from my face is going to get snatched or swatted away faster than the shooter can react to my action.

He'd better hope I just snatch it. If I swat it away, I'll step off the line of force, draw my 1911 and fire three or four rounds from a retention position, ala the character Tom Cruise played in "Collateral".

I practice this, and other sorts of armed, close range combatives weekly.

Unfortunately, that's not always true.
My wing-nut liberal sister (who said 9-11 was "weird") was mugged at gunpoint by two little thugs a few years ago.
She was burglarized twice, had a brick thrown through her window another time by a different group of punks who went to the wrong house. Someone tried to get a credit card using her name and her former boyfriend was robbed at knifepoint while she was only a few feet away.

She's as clueless as ever. It's a miracle she hasn't been raped or murdered.

Concealed carry doesn't work. I've been mugged in pretty much the same way. The mugger always has the element of surprise. No time to reach for a gun.

Wrong. Anyone who takes the time and effort to arm themselves and doesn't take the time and effort to reform their situational awareness is wasting their time.

People who bother to arm themselves usually learn to spot potential situations and avoid them. If you bother to actually learn something about the issue, you will find that an aware and armed person has a potential advantage over a criminal.

One of the problems the cops face is that human reaction time just isn't fast enough to prevent a practiced individual from drawing and firing on them. Cops have to decide in a split second whether the guy is pulling a gun or just being stupid. Cops both kill innocent people and get killed themselves trying to make this distinction. Criminals have to decide whether you are handing over your wallet or pulling a gun, and they don't expect a gun or they just would have shot you in the first place.

Every month, the NRA publishes a handful of verified police reports, many of which are cases where the criminal has a gun trained on someone and winds up dead or in the hospital anyway.

If you think there's a chance you can shoot him as he's getting away, then you're into a gunfight in NYC and the potential of hitting someone who just happens to be walking their dog.

I this is your level of understanding of concealed carry and self defense you should spend some time educating yourself before attempting to debate the subject.

I'm unprepared to invest that time and effort into self-defense. Plus, I'm an old guy, my reflexes aren't as good as some 16 year old jacked up on adrenaline.

My Aikido instructor taught me the opposite,

I has in Japan walking around in a large rather deserted garden when it seemed pretty obvious a guy was following me. I stopped, turned and gave him the meanest coldest stare I could muster. He turned and quickly walked away.

If he was a perp or that he just wanted to get away from some crazed tourist, I'll never know but I do know the desired effect was accomplished..

I understand your points, but don't sell yourself short. Age and treachery will beat youth and enthusiasm every time!

Situational awareness training is what they call street smart in NYC. I have no problem with that. Combat shooting, reflex shooting etc. etc. okay, fine. But not everyone is suited for it. Some people have the "panic gene" or whatever you want to call it, that can't be trained out of them. Neither is everyone suited for taking another person's life.

And yet again, I have no problem with law abiding people carrying.

This girl deserves a Darwin Award.

The girl has a lot of company on that. The last words of many murder victims is, "Go ahead, shoot!"

Probably pointing out she was a very liberal person.

She probably thought being liberal and pro-lowlife counts for something.

It sound like a plan when you can't just kill them right away.

Sad. Too bad she and her boyfriend didn't have a gun with which to defend themselves.

Her blood is on the hands of the people who disarmed decent New Yorkers.
