He'd better hope I just snatch it. If I swat it away, I'll step off the line of force, draw my 1911 and fire three or four rounds from a retention position, ala the character Tom Cruise played in "Collateral".
I practice this, and other sorts of armed, close range combatives weekly.

I'm unprepared to invest that time and effort into self-defense. Plus, I'm an old guy, my reflexes aren't as good as some 16 year old jacked up on adrenaline.

Classic gunfighting move in that movie. In that circumstance, the character played by Tom Cruise truly created the element of surprise with the multiple dirtbags. I suppose the rhetorical question becomes could one perform those movements smoothly and with dexterity while under stress?
I've also been trained on stepping off the line of force...it is a great tool to have the assailant's efforts working against him or her.
