Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge "What are you going to do, shoot us?" by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers two men and two women at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

Guns are already banned in NYC for all practical purposes. Yet thug had one. Victim didn't. Yes there should be gun laws -- mandatory carry.
"I'm convinced that we are going to hear cries and howls for more gun control from Hollyweird now."
Now, now, NYC had already arranged it so that only the outlaws have guns.
She won't get a chance to test out the aphorism: A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged
Too bad she did not get a chance to mature in her thinking...
Reading the article, it says she did not realize there was a gun and tried to push past.
According to Marc MacYoung (or one of those guys) that is very common. Words are exchanged, a weapon is displayed, and somebody uses the you dont have the balls line, or some permutation.
He said of the gunman, "It looked like it's probably the first robbery he'd ever done. He wasn't good at it."
I think I disagree with that assessment. I base that on the fact that he ended up with what he wanted and got away. At least for now. Leaving the primary scene is step one.
Granted youd probably want to keep a lower profile and not kill a lot of people if you want to spend the maximum amount of time out of jail. But even if they were teens, theres a lot of teens that have been robbing and killing four or five years at that point. It is very much their profession.
THIS is why I am not 'soft on crime'.
I had a carry permit in NYC for 19 years...and then Giuliani came in and I (along with thousands of others) could not re-up for it. Just remember that fact (and that he supports late term abortions) before we all get goopy eyed about him running for POTUS.
get a rope...
Nope--her boyfriend did not see a gun and pushed past, thinking that she was behind him. She evidently saw the gun and made the remark that cost her life.
I would be happy to push the plunger on the hot shot for this thug...and, I predict the cops make an arrest within 48 hours.
You realize of course, that New York has had the death penalty ever since Mr. Cuomo was voted out of office but to my knowledge, it HAS NEVER BEEN USED since its reinstitution (same in New Jersey, thanks to liberal judges appointed by the likes of Christine Whitman who find endless "stays" in execution to be justified). The NY death penalty is used only for innocent people, like this beautiful young actress.
Pataki has been a huge disappointment, especially to gun owners.
Mugger will get off using the "Nobody likes a smart-ass" defense.
Death by arrogance.
A teenage boy I know was mugged at gunpoint on his way home from the movies. This was a Northern Virginia suburb.
He gave the guy his whole wallet (without any lip) and then ran. He lived to tell me about it.
Actually the article says that the fiance did not see the gun and tried to push past, not her.
