Nixon Son-in-Law Weighs Challenge to Clinton in '06 (Hillary Alert)
NY Times ^ | 1/28/05 | MICHAEL SLACKMAN

Posted on 01/27/2005 11:00:05 PM PST by nj26

The prospects of a Kennedy-Cuomo clash ended when Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said this week that he would not run against Andrew M. Cuomo for state attorney general. But now New Yorkers face the possibility of another clash of political families, this one pitting Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton against Edward F. Cox, a son-in-law of President Richard M. Nixon.

Mr. Cox, who married Tricia Nixon in the Rose Garden when her father was president, has told friends and Republican Party insiders that he is considering running against Mrs. Clinton in 2006, they said.

Mr. Cox, 58, was busy making funeral arrangements for his mother, Anne, who died on Tuesday, and he referred questions to a friend who is his adviser. The friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Mr. Cox is out there "testing the waters."

The state Republican Party chairman, Stephen Minarik, said this week in an interview that his first choice would be to have former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani run against Mrs. Clinton. But with Mr. Giuliani showing no interest in the race, other names have begun to circulate, among them Mr. Cox's.

Democrats did not react to the possibility of a matchup with Mr. Cox. "We assume the Republicans will field an opponent and Senator Clinton will continue to focus on working hard for the people of New York," said Howard Wolfson, an adviser to Mrs. Clinton.

Mr. Cox, a partner in Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler, a Manhattan law firm, has a long and varied career in public service, as well as prominent family ties on his side. His father was a well-known lawyer and his grandfather a judge.

As a young man, Mr. Cox, who was born in Suffolk County, developed a reputation for having hailed from the liberal arm of the Republican Party. He went to Princeton and Harvard Law School, wrote for The New Republic and worked for Ralph Nader.

Mr. Cox worked for President Nixon's re-election campaign and has helped raise money for Republican national campaigns, and in 1994 he was co-chairman of Dennis C. Vacco's successful bid for attorney general. Mr. Vacco lost to Eliot Spitzer four years later.

Mr. Cox is a founding director and former chairman of the Student/Sponsor Partnership for underprivileged urban high school students and is chairman of the State Council of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and a member of the State Commission on Judicial Nomination, which recommends candidates for the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court.

Mr. Cox, Tricia Nixon Cox and their son, Christopher, live in New York City.

Hillary worked hard during Watergate to help bring down Nixon. I hope Cox will settle this score.

The New Republic? Ralph Nader?

Here's a novel approach by the NYGOP, run to the left of Hillary!

Texas,

Thanks, as Uncle Rushy would say, I am sure we could enjoy a conversation over a cold adult beverage!

But seriously, I have a theory GWB didn't the 2004 election.

Richard Nixon did, let me explain.

Kerry was the Anti Vietnam "Reg" that became a Hippie and enabled the Ted Kennedy agenda (and the North Vietnam's as well). He enabled them so well we left when we actually won and left people hanging.

John O'Neill didn't forget it, neither did 260 of his brothers.

In 1980, the U.S. Olympic Hockey team's coach Herb Brooks went in the locker room before the last game with Finland after beating the Russians and he said "if you blow this one you will take it to your F*&%!ng grave, your F*&*^%g grave" and walked out.

The U.S. one big time. The Swift Vets got that sentiment and are at an age were it didn't matter what the outcome it was ,about setting the story straight before you meet you maker.

Now hippy pukes like Meathead Rob Riener put there whole existence and gestalt in the 60's mentality. This was there last time to feel power that they felt they are entitled to before they get to old.

He is now bald, fat and probably has Hemorrhoid's, and the biggest pain in his ass is the fact GWB is at the helm for 4 more years.

What galls them "An Oakie From Muscogee" ergo the late 60's song, beat them, A huge win against the culture war they have been waging on this country for 40 years. Richard Nixon is smiling from heaven with shadenfrudel from the torment the likes of Meathead and Hillary are feeling. You and I can enjoy it for the next four years from the comfort of our living rooms.

Regards, Taildragger

I had to laugh. It is a surprisingly cool answer from a democrat.

Bad choice, he carries the stigma of his Father In Law into that race and that will buy Hillary a victory in that area.

I see that one as a loss.

Rudy has a great shot if he ran.
I just hope some STAR of the Republican party is available and will bust their ass to remove this Hillary person who once before tried to take over 1/7th of the US economy and convert it to socialized medicine.

Seven,

I was just entering my teen years, and my mind wasn't square politically, what the heck I grew up In Massachusetts!

But it hit me when the flap post 9-11 about news anchors not wanting to wear the flag pins. I happen to catch a special on Nixon and it showed Halderman getting grilled by some old Fart Senator aggh I can't remember his name.

But Halderman had the flag lapel pin, it was there way of saying to the hippie type screw you. Then it hit me, the news anchors we have now are in a Vietnam era time warp and they couldn't bear wearing the pins because it brought back to Nixon and Watergate, God forbid they come across as a "Reg".

I have a very politically astute retired professor that I discuss politics with and when I mentioned the whole Halderman lapel pin/anchor man 9-11 scenario he said oh my, he remembered it all, and I nailed it.

I like your theory.

Yes, this has to be the biggest pain for the 60s bomb-throwers, their stupid attacks on this country are still failing, the poor fools in fly-over country just don't see how marvelous it would be to turn socialist, like our betters want us to do.

Well, those aging, gray-ponytailed creeps don't have much time left to tear this country apart, maybe when they're in their rocking chairs they'll look back on their fruitless, wasted lives and see how pointless they've become.

Yes, Richard Nixon will have the last word in this battle!
