The amount of damage is simply staggering!
That this boat ever made it back to port is a tribute to its designers, builders, and especially to the crew and captain. How does America keep finding men like these?
Can't tell what you're looking at. I understand much of the new sonar systems are ceramic, but I have no idea if they look like what you're seeing.
2. Is the damaged area, is it accessable by the crew under normal conditions?
No. If you look at the visible damage farthest aft, you'll see the two torpedo tube doors. They're just ahead of the farthest forward part of the pressure hull (torpedo room there on the lowest deck... sonar equiptment room a couple above)
Newport News builds some tough boats.
You got that right. And some great guys crew these boats and bring them home. Remember that in time of war they hope to survive rather more "explosive" collisions... yeah, they build 'em tough.
Take a course set up to the design limits of the tank at full speed (turns, hills, etc) and you are required to run it at full speed not being able to view the course layout prior to setting off.
God for you resisting the counseling. Poor kid was probably bored to tears!! The school never have considered that, I guess.
Can't verify the authenticity of the photo. The RO is covering up the site for the PlayBoy fold-out.
I keep picturing the scene from Galaxy Quest when the grown child star is trying to pilot the starship out of the hangar, an dyou just hear this gosh-awful scraping noise.
You guys provided some very good expert information on this thread. I enjoyed reading your posts. Thanks!
One look at the damage and I would guess that every weld and structural member could be stressed or tweaked from the impact?
It sure looks like a pile of scrap metal to my untrained eye.
MSS in Hayes Valley?
A heck of a lot more interesting than anything you're going to see in a tank... that's what. :-)
Why are there two steering wheels (Just to get the question answered before somebody seriously asks it)
Very nice but that is an "Emergency Blow". Usually the area is designated and cleared and a surface vessel monitors (except for that little joyride off the coast of Hawaii recently).
A sub does not surface during angles and dangles.
Thank you so much for posting these....We have one expert crew...Lucky there weren't more lives lost.
Prayers for the sailor that was killed.
5.56mm
It doesn't matter. The skipper is supposed to ensure the area is clear. That was why we had surface surveillance, periscope and sonar checks. Now if that fishing boat was propelled by sails and could travel at sixty MPH he might have some defense.
They may not use surface surveillance now but if that is still the mode, he was joy-riding and should be hung. And I mean that literally.
WT, wasn't he showing off for some civilian visitors? That's what I recall, anyway.
Awww... I just like the picture. Seriously, I thought the blow ends the A&D on the shakedown cruise?
And what happened off Hawaii?
Yes. It was probably "suggested" by some higher ups and he got caught between a rock and a hard place. If that is the case, I pity him but if your the captain, you cannot neglect the safety of your ship and the crew. He should have asked for surface surveillance and who knows what was of any periscope and sonar surveillance prior to the event. Bottom line, it looks like he was too caught up in "entertaining". I would doubt that he had the Conn so, we have the CO, the XO, the OOD, the Diving Officer at least dropping the ball, ot sy least unwilling to stand up.
Holey Carp! O_o
It can but we frequently rigged for angles and dangles, had our fun, and then returned to our transit or patrol without surfacing. The only times we did emergency blows, that was a specific evolution and not sequentially tied to angles and dangles.
And what happened off Hawaii?
If I had a little more teme I would photoshop a lot of pieces of a Japanese fishing boat and a few floating bodies into your film clip. There is some more background in the posts preceding this.
